I have “ medium “ stained kitchen cabinets. We just put new lighter colored granite counter tops in. We have decided that they will have to be really dark stain, white paint, or grayish paint to work with the granite

1. If we were to go dark stain, do we have to completely sand down to almost raw to get the right look?

2. If we paint, will we see the wood grain?

3. What is an expected cost ? Tract house

4. Would we be making a mistake painting stain grade cabinets?

Stain grade usually has knots and crevices in the wood so it may not look great when painted since paint grade is a smooth wood finish. But if the paint is applied correctly you should not see the wood grain.

You can paint them but you wont see any of the wood grain. They will likely need to have the poly stripped off of them first. We painted the stained cabinets white in our old hose prior to selling it. They actually looked better than they ever did when we lived in the house. lol

Painting would be easier/cheaper than staining most likely. But maybe not.

Lord keep this thread away from my wife! She’s been wanting this since we moved in here too.

Whichever route you decide, prep prep prep! Clean. Prep some more. Clean again.

The grain may show depending on the type of wood, to restain them darker is quite a task , sanding down to bare wood is the best but hard to get it done properly, gel stain over your existing stain is an option but it is really hard to make it look right. If you can find someone that knows what they are doing a toner any hue you like can be sprayed over your existing stain, that is your best bet but not many people know how to do it.

Do it right, rip them out and put in new cabinets or at least, have them refaced.

I painted the kitchen cabinets in my previous house. They turned out great. Do it right, it's a big job. My brother painted professionally and he was the boss on this part of the remodel. Remove the doors, drawers and hardware and pulls. I numbered them so they would go back in the same opening. This will be a spray job. The doors and drawers were painted in my garage. Sanding and prep took longer than painting. Do it this way and they'll look like they were painted in an autobody shop. Most painting is a do it yourself job. This is one that a pro is worth the $ if it's not in your wheel house.

BIL... if you simply want to darken your cabinets and still see the wood grain, you can do what’s called “glazing”. It’s not as easy as this video shows, but it can be done. Takes practice to make it all come out even.

I ended up doing my own, it was a long process but worth it in the end. The paint has been on for two years and with 5 kids in the house it is holding up way better than I expected. I'll say that it's because of the prep work and the paint we used. I gave everything a light sanding with 220, came back and wiped everything with denatured alcohol and then lightly sanded with 320, don't know if that's the correct process but it worked in this case. Primed then painted, I really like the Benjamin Moore paint, It was a line they make for cabinets. Anyway, the whole kitchen was sprayed and it did take some time. Like they mentioned above I took all the drawer fronts off, all the doors off, along with the hardware, doors and drawer fronts got sprayed outside, the rest was inside.

I'm not ready to do it again but really satisfied how it came out.

It's actually a light gray, if you want the exact color I can get it.

Exactly, I think the color I used was called "sugar cookie". That alcohol wipe down removes particles. Do it again before you prime.

I did ours when we first moved in, was a very light stained wood color. I used a Java Transparent Gel Stain and it turned out great, but that was a big job and I would not do it again. I'd hire it out.

If you going to paint them do it right. We did my Inlaws kitchen/baths a month or so ago.... FIL didnt want to take the time to take the doors off so we we painted cabinets with doors on before they were installed. I wouldnt have been happy with the results and i wouldnt have done it in my home.

SIde note, i hate painted cabinets so i am a little biased.
