Let’s be honest with ourselves for a bit. We all like John Wayne for who he was. His acting and movies in general were not that great.

James Stewart is another good example. Good guy but his characters were almost cartoonish

John Wayne was such a strong presence/personality that he really didn’t have to act - especially as long as it was a western. Which is the reason 90% of his movies were westerns. That said, he had become a pretty dang good actor by the 70s. He did a great job in The Shootist (IMO his best performance).

Jimmy Stewart was a good actor. Yes some of his roles were over-the-top, but he was a fine actor. “Rear Window”, “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington”, and several others are excellent performances. IMHO.

Glen Campbell played the "texican" right? What was so bad about him?

To me his character was suppose to be an outsider to the territory he was in and fit fine. If its because of his acting lord we better watch out or all the older movies are junk.

Put me down as favoring the old version. I don't much like Jeff Bridges in the remake, seems very fake and cant understand him.

If you can watch that movie and not cringe at Glen Campbell’s feeble attempts at acting then you are a better man than me. His performance comes off exactly like a 12 year old in their first ever school play.

He was one of the best musicians in the business. He was not an actor.

This sums Glen Campbell up very nicely.

It was widely acknowledged by all involved with the film that he was hired solely to cash in on his musical popularity at the time and that his acting was terrible. The director called it “wooden, at best”. Glen himself said this about his performance: “I had never acted before, and after “True Grit” I think my record’s still clean.” smile

I read the book twice. The first movie followed the book the best.

It's a really short book. Click here and you can upload it to your Kindle

One of his, and best lines ever, from “Cool Hand Luke”...

“What we’ve got here...is a failure to communicate.”

Absolutely correct, one of the best

Hate to nitpick but the line is actually "failure to communicate",, not "A failure to communicate". For years I also thought it was A failure to communicate.

To be fair, Ricky Nelson wasn’t any better than Glen Campbell.

Looking at the list of singers who turned actor(and the list is long) the only ones who impressed me are Sinatra and Streisand. Honorable mention to Mark Wahlberg.

Kris Kristofferson is a much, much better actor than a singer.

I know he is a talented songwriter but his singing is atrocious.

Honorable mention to Dwight Yoakam In the actor/singer category. He was great in sling blade although I don’t know how much of that was actual acting. I think he is one of the greatest singers of our generation

Dwight Yoakum is one of my favorite singers, and he was thoroughly entertaining as Doyle.

Neither film production used the correct scenery. Oklahoma doesn't have snow-capped peaks. I'm surprised the John Wayne version wasn't filmed in Monument Valley.

Watch him in Crank.

You would never, ever believe he is a country singer let alone a very talented one

Lol yes that always bothered me also. Starting out, they go from Arkansas to the Rocky Mountains in one day’s ride (even though they call it Oklahoma).

Yes, Dwight is a great actor! I really liked him in the Newton Boys.
