We did not have Styrofoam in my day, that came later in life. Very little plastic, toys were made of tin or stamped steel. Egg cartons were a form of cardboard.

TG&Y and Gibson were some great stores. Still have some 22 bullets from Gibsons.

Yeah you haven’t lived as a kid unless you spent a thousand hours in the fabric store while your Momma or Grandmomma shopped for Butterick patterns and fabric. Ours was Hancock Fabric.

We had a Mott's and Davenports. They sold cracker balls for 5 packages for 5 cents. Does anybody remember cracker balls?

You throw them on something hard and they pop?

yep, we had a 5 & Dime and a Gibsons, also White's Auto and Western Auto. Bought my first shotgun at about 10 years old at White's auto, double barrel 20 gauge that I still have.

In Abilene I remember WT Grant's, TG&Y, Clarks, SS Kresge, Ben Franklin and a Motts. The Gibson's chain was founded in Abilene on Sycamore street, a hole in the wall store where it started was like an old time junk store. This was more of a discount store than a 5 and dime store, like a Clarks,

A local store, Thornton's was a cross between the 5 and dime and a discount store, then they got uppity, and went "high class" and the family sold it. At one time old man Thornton sold everything from baby shoes to tractors, with autos, repair services to groceries. Billed as a city within a city, they sold everything, best hardware selection in town, clothes from work to the best dress clothes in town. The store covered a 2 block area of south downtown, if you needed it they had it. .

Prices have really gone up on the planes. Was thinking of getting some for my grandson's B-day party and what a shock at their cost.
