I saw the SR-71 retire. They brought it in for an airshow at Kelly/Lackland. It was the last time it flew. They pulled everything off of it, and now it sits at Lackland AFB. The Texas national guard used to fly the F4 back when I was a kid, they would do exercises over my grandparents land. They where incredibly loud when they opened up. They where replaced by the F16 it was a sad day.

My son says that when he was in Iraq his favorite airplane wasn't a fixed wing aircraft. It was the Apache helicopter. He doesn't talk a lot about his time in combat but says that more than once they were danged glad to see a couple of Apaches dive in and eliminate the competition. [Linked Image]

brother was a pilot on c-130. Retired at 20 years. LT. Col. Oh the stories he told. Especially in Afganistan. And stuff he bought back. 3 deployments.
I agree, C130 the best.

I don't know, every single H-4 that was ever built still exists, so we might have to throw a vote its way. flush

The pilots and crew of these had some of the biggest brass balls of any of the pilots, they saved a lot of lives while risking their own to get wounded out of Hot LZ's that had WIA's needing transport to field hospitals.

Cool, my dad will enjoy these pics! Although he was on the team that designed and built the radar at TI he never saw the plane in person except for the nosecone. All testing was done in Beechcraft and C130's. Once it was perfected it was turned over to the AF for install and final tuning. We went to the air show at Ft. Worth JRB, he was there a short time when it was Carswell, and got a pic of him next to the F4 on permanent display there. We heard lots of stories after that, of course the whole time he worked on it at TI after he was out of the AF it was classified and I never knew what he had worked on until he retired many years later and he was given a couple of framed pics of F4's.

Small world. When my dad retired in 95' he went to work for TI building guidance systems for missiles and bombs. these are placed in the nose/cones!

Where is all this B-58 love coming from? She was nothing more than a dang triangle with four go-tubes slapped under it.

B-58, Mirage, Mig-21, A-4, F-4, F-16, B-2, F-117, F-18, etc. etc. etc. if you squint hard enough they take on the same silhouette. bolt

Ya gotta have actual wings for consideration of best plane ever.

And no disrespect to the rotor-bird saviors, but if the wing spins over your head, it is its own unstable animal. roflmao
