Aoudad Bullet

Aoudad Bullet - 05/13/19 02:17 PM

I'm planning an Aoudad hunt and it was suggested that I use a bonded bullet. I will be loading my own ammunition and I'm looking for bullet suggestions for my 300 Win Mag. Something 200+ grains? What load do you use?

Thanks.

115 VLD from 257wby... I bang flopped two at ... 210 and 280 yards

Also seen 6.5 creedmoor 129gr and 7-08 no idea on bullet weight

I've killed a crap load of them using 7mm 160 AB and partition. Also 140 AB's and partitions. Hit 'em in the right place and any well constructed bullet works fine.

What Jgraider said....exactly.

In a .300 Win I think anything you can stick in the gun will work...

I took my Gold Aoudad with a .257 using factory 100g Norma spitzers. Good luck with your hunt.

Remington Core lokt 130 grain .270 never let me down. Also if you forget your bullets at home any Walmart around will have yourcorrect loads...

I used the Berger VLD-H 190 grain in my .300 WinMag. No issues. Bang-flop

Re: Aoudad Bullet - 05/14/19 12:20 AM

I know guys who have killed plenty with 130 grain core lokts from a .270.

I’ve shot two with a .257 wby w/110 grain accubonds and both took multiple hits in the vitals.

My wife shot one dead center in the neck at 50 yards with a 7mm-08 and Hornady SST’s and the aoudad hit the deck, then jumped up and ran into the wild blue yonder, never to be seen again

I would use a 180 grain in a accubond and call it good.

They are tough animals. Break them down with a shoulder shot

270 with Hornady 130 gr. At 199 yards running up a canyon wall 1 shot

I shot 5 aoudad in Jan at the PD hunt with a 6.5 creedmoor 129gr, none made it more than 50 yards. At 200+ grains i am sure you will be fine as long as your accuracy is there. Get prone or at least get some trigger sticks if you are trying to reach out there.

I killed a big ram with my 300 win mag using 168 grain bergers. He was quartered toward me at 200 yards. I put it on the point of the shoulder and it melted him.

In 300wm loading your own ammo I think it would be tough to beat a 175gr Barnes LRX or a 180gr Accubond. Both should give you nice flat shooting velocity and plenty of penetration.

Re: Aoudad Bullet - 05/15/19 09:31 PM

130 gr Accubonds worked well for me. Killed a handful with a 270 back in January from 75 yards to 330 yards. None took more than a step with the first shot, shot at one multiple times but that is another story...

Any stout bullet, bonded or mono will work, just pick your favorite.

I was surprised actually, I had heard they were very tough to kill. Only recovered one accubond, 330 yards, steep uphill shot, recovered under offside hide in the back-strap and it looked like an advertisement bullet.

In a 300 Mag, I don’t know how you could go wrong with a 165 or 180 grain Accubond or Partition.

Re: Aoudad Bullet - 07/09/19 11:14 PM

A 150gr. or 165gr. Hornady GMX , Nosler Partition, E-Tip, or Accubond will do.

They are not bulletproof. I killed mine with a 154gr. Sierra BTSP.

Re: Aoudad Bullet - 07/12/19 04:08 PM

I run the 215 Berger VLD-H in mine at 2910 fps. A friend of mine runs the same load and has killed a few at over 300 yards with the same bullet. But like others have said a good quality bullet with a decent BC for long shots should have no problem.
The 210gr VLD's are great as well.

Re: Aoudad Bullet - 07/15/19 08:07 PM

Aoudad aren’t that hard to kill, placement trumps all of course. In my years of guiding hunters on them, the most common mistake I saw made was trying to shoot them like WT, Elk, etc. Even with reminding hunters they were an African animal and the location of vitals, when it came crunch time sometimes all bets were off and the shots were too far back. I’ve seen several rams soak up bonded and mono bullets out of dragon slayer magnums with placement behind the shoulder and cover miles afterwards. More than a few handfuls that required follow up shots with the same set ups...

Personally I’ve killed them with 6.5 CM and 147 ELDMs/140 AMaxes/139 Scenars....6.5 SAUM and 139 Scenars....308 and 155 Scenars.... 7 SAUM and 150 Scenars/162 AMaxes....7 WSM and 168 Bergers.
