Desert Bighorn Sheep - 02/28/18 02:26 AM

What outfitter(s) offer Desert Bighorn sheep hunts? What is included not included with the pricing? I understand Desert Bighorn sheep are limited in available hunting opportunities regulated by TPWD.

Thanks Deans

You’ll be looking at anywhere from $40,000 (great price on a cancellation hunt) to $100,000. Almost all of them will be all inclusive once you arrive at Camp. Some will literally be a Camp and some can be a bit more luxurious.

It will never happen, but I am curious how people pay for hunts like that? Do they write a check? Cash? Bank to Bank? Credit Card? How much before the hunt is needed for a deposit, and how to you sleep at night sending huge sums to Mexico months before going there?

There probably isn’t a bigger difference between two things than there is between a desert bighorn and one of those “hunts”

Re: Desert Bighorn Sheep - 03/03/18 08:02 PM

A similar “Texas sheep” to a mature 8 year old desert would most certainly be around 10% of the cost. There are several Texas ranches with 40 inch Urails, Stumbergs, and crosses that will range in the 7500-10,000 range. These are great hunts and have done several, but the idea of the hunt and exclusiveness of a bighorn is unmatched. The elite club.

To answer your question: most out of the country trips have a liaison/planner in the states. In my experience I have merely transferred funds to a US bank. Not to scary if you do your homework.

The cost is all relative. 20 years ago, the thought of spending more than $1,000 on an animal was crazy. Sheep are at the pentacle of all of it (in my opinion) with some argyle sheep hunts running $150,000. A desert is on my list and 3-4 years out (unless I draw) of pure saving and planning. How deep is your passion?

A while back there was a post on the THF for Desert Bighorn x Mouflon rams that were 6/8 bighorn as I recall. Sheephunter harvested one that looked remarkably like a desert bighorn (his pictures so I will not post here). Robert Stuart (KIMBER1911) was the outfitter.

Robert, You may want to offer up your 6/8 bighorn hybrids as an option

Thank for your recommendation sir.

Tony is correct I do have some very good looking hybrid sheep. The best time to hunt them is in the summer months.

Here is one that a fellow THF member harvested.

The Mexico hunts are about as good as it gets on price without drawing. Have seen awesome deals on last minute hunts or cancellations but those can’t be counted on

I agree most of the Texas Tag land owner tags will cost closer to 70k Nathan Olmstead with Profet Muskwa gets maybe 1-2 a year from a landowner I know. High West outfitters gets a tag or so too...or you could go to auctions and take your chances. I was at DSC last year and talked to several guys that had them for around 40k in Mexico...I did mine in 2017 and it was a blast!
