Axis and Black buck Advise?

Axis and Black buck Advise? - 10/04/17 03:43 AM

Purchased 25 acres in Blue Ridge Texas. Would like to high fence about 20 acres of it and raise some Axis and maybe some Black buck. Huge stock pond that is very deep, and a creek with fresh water running through it. I am financially able to supply supplemental feed as needed. Any ranchers or biologists with stocking level recommendations? I see guys running 6 to 8 cattle on pieces of land identical to mine with relative ease, so I am thinking maybe a dozen Axis, and a half a dozen Black buck? Just cleared all the land of old growth and reclaimed it as pasture, but I left plenty of large groups of tree's for cover, with the entire back 3rd of the property being private, where deer could feel like they were not always being watched. Also can improve the grass if needed, as I don't plan on adding deer for another year or so. Any thoughts would be appreciated ya'll.

Selling hunts or just want to have pretty animals walking around?

Nah, personal enjoyment and consumption. I have done a solid job in the past years of eating mostly wild game meat myself and for my family. This would just be an extension of that. Easy way to harvest some protein while enjoying the view from my back porch. If I ever got over crowded I might let soem youth archery hunts happen seeing as the Axis alone, with 10 does, could produce 6 to 8 fawns per year...thats alot of deer to eat. But it's such a small piece of land I'd feel funny selling "hunts".

How cold does it get there? I know people have had some success with them a lot farther north, but the risk of death from the cold is very real with the blackbuck. Have you considered fallow instead of blackbuck? Or sika? In my opinion, both taste a lot better then blackbuck, but none are as good as axis.

That is the sort of feedback I am looking for. I am slightly north and east of Dallas, so we do get some below freezing temps each winter. I had thought they may be more susceptible to that just because of their small size. I could switch to Fallow, which I also enjoy. I know they are much more cold tolerant. What about stocking levels?

most cattle men will tell you 1 unit per 10acres

Maintain your low brush if you can. Axis will need it until they call down and get used to the area. Fallow is a good choice. If you get sika you need to check with TAHC on CWD monitoring.

Agreed Colt45. And from my research, for every unit, I can keep up to 6 Axis Deer per ten acres on the grass alone. With supplemental feeding, I am thinking we can pull off a dozen Axis (plus some fawns) and a half a dozen of something else...wanted BlackBuck but it may be too cold here for them, so maybe some Fallow morphs.

Start with 6 axis. You'll have 100 before you know it. We started with 15 on 450 acres and they multiplied fast. Now it's a task to keep the numbers in check.

How often do you introduce new bucks into the herd for breeding purposes?
