Red Deer and Whitetails in Same Pasture

Red Deer and Whitetails in Same Pasture - 09/06/15 11:45 PM

Appreciate seeing all the nice pictures of the elk and red deer that are being posted. Was told by an aquaintance that combining red deer and whitetail in the same pasture may not be the best combination. Fellow told me that red deer will physically dominate the smaller whitetail and basically monopolize available food. Would like to add just a couple stags(no hinds)to a pasture, but, if this is going to create a problem I guess I will pass. Would appreciate anyone's experience with having tried this. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Regards.

Red Deer will dominate a feeder and eat till it is empty. They eat a lot for their body size also. I would fence my feeders so the Red Deer could not get to them(it can be done).

Just second hand information from places that I've been. I was told they are very dominate and will fight with every other species around them. I've been told the same about Audad. You just have to have multiple feeders out so the other animals can have a place to eat

I've heard the same thing before, but we have never had an issue with it. Then again, it may be that we have a low enough deer:feeder ratio or that our feeders (1 ton) are big enough for the red deer to get there fill and allow the other species to then get theirs. That pertains to our protein feeders. Red deer very rarely visit our corn feeders, but I know for a fact that our neighbor had major issues with his red stags tearing up his corn feeders.

get more feeders... we have both and they coexist just fine.
but whitetail do get scared off sometimes by most anything. pigs, turkeys, exotics, their shadow smile
