Educate me some on Aoudad - 08/05/14 06:09 PM

I pulled the game cam card and SURPRISE 3 aoudad at the feeder !

So educate me...
Rams and ewes both have horns right? ( I can't see a hang down in any of the pics)

I have 2 with slinder horns and one with much thicker bases.

All 3 are SKINNY what do they LIKE to eat? These have been coming in for 4 seconds of corn.

Are they sheep or goats?

And are they good to eat or just edible?

Both rams and ewes have horns. Rams are usually longer and more massive especially at the bases. Ewes can be fairly long in excess of 20 inches but lack the mass. The bases on a ram usually look like they are touching, but on a ewe you can see a definite gap. As with any game usually younger is better eating. I have taken 5 auodad's "Barbary sheep where I come from", and all have been good. But that big ram has still eluded me. Biologists consider it intermediate between a goat and sheep, it can hybridize with domestic goats but not sheep. As far as what they eat?, I hunt them on free range so all I can tell you is they will hit an alfalfa field if they can but that is all I know. I will say that it is far and away my favorite hunt, even though the live in the worst country around. Hope this helps...........

Thanks for the information.
Every bit of info I can get will help at this point. These are in pine forest near Trinity Tx. They are in poor condition body wise. We have LOTS of free choice protein on the place but so far they have only shone up on my corn feeder. I was already thinking of feeding alfalfa bails.

I sure want them to stay around AT LEAST until I get one and if they fatten up in the mean time that's even better. I may never see them but I will be out there hunting every chance I get!

I have aoudads coming through my Rocksprings property quite regular. Very unpredictable roaming nomads that I don't see a regular pattern to movements. They don't seem interested much in my feeders, but maybe they have good natural feed in my area. Easy to distinguish between male/female from body size, chaps, horns. I mixed mine with pork into sausage & it was very good, but a bit chewy on it's own.

What they like? Salt, sulfur blocks mainly. Cant keep them off of it. Protein blocks too. Rams also have bigger "chaps and main" and if older more darker colored. The mass is a dead give away. They are 50/50 sheep and goat. That's why they do so well.

Younger is always better to eat.
