Calling in a Sika - 07/30/13 02:10 AM
Has anyone successfully called in a Sika? I was wondering if they would respond much like an elk would.

Yep. They don't come in as aggressively as an elk, but calling definately works.
Like any other calling, the more worked up they are the better it works.

What type of call do you use? Are you imitating the bugle or the cow calls?

Open reed cow call. They make a Sika specific call called a Sika seducer, but you can get the same sound out of a hot lips or imakandabull crazy. If you 'bugle' with the open reed it sounds closer to a jap Sika than if you use a tube.
They are very territorial, so what calls to make depend on the activity of the stags. If they are pretty quiet just doing their early morning bugles I just stick with subtle cow calls, if the stags are talking to each other, I bugle.
