Exotic species you've killed.... - 01/15/12 02:19 AM

I thought it would be interesting to hear what species of exotic game some of you guys have taken over the years here in Texas. What was your favorite/most memorable? etc...

I'll go first:

-Axis (2)
-Blackbuck
-Eland
-American Bison (5)
-Scimitar Horned Oryx (2)
-Addax
-Water Buffalo

The Eland was by far my most memorable and fun hunt. I'm hoping to add Nilgai and Aoudad to the list next year.

My Gemsbok was killed on the ranch next to my deer lease in the hill country! And most of those can be hunted in Texas.

Yes I have eaten some of the younger ones...made some into jerky, dried sausage, smoked the tenders/backstraps and given the rest away. None were wasted on any of them.

Yes, I know most of those can be hunted in Texas....but I've also seen where he said he shot those in Africa. I was interested in hearing what people have killed HERE IN TEXAS (as I stated in my original post)....not in Africa.

I've killed all the basic TX stuff....Axis (187" ROE #1 ranked several years ago), Fallow, Blackbuck (#1 in ROE again several years ago). then took a Merio Ram(#3 ranked ROE about 10 years ago & recently a 43" Oryx. All of these with the exception of ram have been taken off of Porter's Exotic's in Flynn.

Re: Exotic species you've killed.... - 01/27/12 04:10 PM

My list of exotics I have taken looks like the manifest for Noah's Ark. It is easier and shorter to list what I have not shot of the 64 SCI listed Introduced Trophies:
Gaur
Beisa Oryx
Arabian Oryx
Nile Lechwe
White Bearded Wildebeest
Dorcas Gazelle
Goitered Gazelle
West Caucasian Tur
Brow-Antlered Deer

That's 55 off of the SCI list, but there are species that are commonly shot in Texas that are not included on the list, some of which I've shot and others I have not. These include watusi, longhorn, banteng, capybara, zebra, kangaroo, etc.

Wherever possible I have shot these free range, such as Gemsbok in NM, Feral Goat in Puerto Rico, etc. The others I have shot on the largest properties I could access that offered the species in spite of the high fence. I have made it a point not to shoot any animals I have specifically handled (darted, transported, netted, etc.) or on my own ranch.

Most of this was research and collecting. I have a small exotic wildlife "museum". Also, it is a responsible thing to do when you have clients hunting with you for these species. How can you really assess the difficulty of the hunt, recommendation of weapons, quality of meat, etc if you have not yourself hunted and used the animals?

After I completed the list to the extent I can or want to, I wrote the book on it - literally. The only book specifically dedicated to Hunting the Introduced Species in the United States - the books title. www.huntingtheintroducedspecies.com

Somebody a while back was asking about gaur. The only person that responded was somebody who knew of a ranch in Kansas that ran hunts for them. I am sure there are a few throughout the state though.

Bronze Fallow buck (spotted),1, fallow doe (white),1-Both with bow
Gold blackbuck- bow

I think I remember that. Thanks for the input. They are a really cool Buff. I saw some mounted ones when I was a Kid at Peterson Taxidermy in Wyoming. I think those came from India.?....

Re: Exotic species you've killed.... - 01/28/12 03:12 AM

The local zoo has a few, and I have seen them in a zoo in Bangkok Thailand.

I have heard several quotes, that list them as the largest wild bovine. I have also heard Wisent, and Woods Bison so listed. I have seen all the worlds wild cattle in person and I personally feel that the Woods Bison is the tallest, and the water buffalo is the biggest. But there are lots of types of water buffalo, and I don't know if the feral water buffalo in Northern Australia should be included or not. As they were originally livestock.

Then again I have seen a lot of data claiming that Lord Derby Eland are heavier than Livingstone Eland. I have seen 4 different herds of LDE in zoos, and every single one of them was smaller than a the Livingstone Eland that I have seen in size. Though I do beleive them to be taller.

Re: Exotic species you've killed.... - 01/28/12 03:19 AM

I have hunted aoudad in New Mexico but never killed one.

In Namibia I have shot:
Gemsbok x3
Springbok x3
Red Hartebeast x2
Mountain Zebra
Baboon
Steinbok x2
greater kudu
blesbok

And I have taken a pure European wild boar in Maine.

Chital,

I have heard that too, but I don't believe it.

I am convinced it is either water buffalo or Woods bison. I have seen a few zoo gaur and they were smaller in size and weight that the bigger bison I have seen. Often by a lot. But I have not looked at as many Gaur as I have bison.

Re: Exotic species you've killed.... - 01/28/12 05:48 PM

I have a friend who raised Gaur in the early 90's here in Texas and he told me his ranged from 2000+ upward on the males and smaller on females. I think there are 3 different sub-species of them with one being smaller than the other 2 by quite a bit.

It is either Gaur or PLAINS bison. The reason why I say the PLAINS bison is because I did a whole research report on it. The reason why i say Gaur is because my uncle has met them FTF in the wilds of India. IMO. Everyone has their own opinions and this was mine.

Japanese Sika(2 trophies, 1 doe)

only 1 so far, a gold medal axis but it was a great hunt. spent 4 days both sitting stands and spot/stalk style. saw lots of bucks, and missed a chance at one that would have gone around 36". on the last evening sitting in the stand I saw a lone buck and we got out to make a stalk on it. turned out that lone buck had about 30 friends. we got prone and watched them in the creek bed, saw a few fight, heard some calling, then my buddy pointed out the biggest one and I dropped the hammer on him. dropped in his tracks. can't wait to get another one with my bow
