Oryx hunt - 10/14/11 02:10 AM
So we made a deal with some people to come shoot an axis doe for my 6 year old son. The ranchers wife had promised a trapper that after tonight he could come in and get all the left over axis does. Well we didnt get a doe tonight, the ranchers wife felt so bad for little willy that she is letting him come back on Sunday morning to shoot a 30" scimitar oryx instead. $400 for a pretty nice trophy. What will he have to look forward to next year? BTW is 30" a respectable size to mount?

If I knew at 6 that I could work some old farmer over by being cute and charming, I would have. Im just grateful for the deal. Im not a rich guy who has opportunities like this much, but I figured at $400 we would splurge for the little guy. I will be posting pics soon. Im not sure who is more excited, him or me?

This $400 hunt for a great young hunter is proof that there are a few really great people left in the world who value the next generation of hunters more than they do a quick payday!!! Thanks to the ranch who made it happen. 31" on both sides!!

If it were me I would say, no on spending the money for a 30". Your likely to find the mount is going to cost more than what your paying to hunt that. I think most good taxidermy work for a scimitar shoulder mount is around $600 to $800. I would probably look into doing just an euro on it and selling the cape. Capes for scimitar may be pretty plentiful right now so you might not get too much for it but maybe enough for an even trade on doing an euro mount.
For a 30" your probably looking at something that is about two years old. 36" is usually where trophy record book comes in, but if its a trophy to you it wouldn't matter what anyone else thinks.
The meat is great and you will love every bit of it.

70 yards, unassisted .410 slug, 1 shot, it ran 10 yards. Not bad for a 6 year old kid!

I dropped it off at animal art in Austin. Tyler over there is my best friend. He gave me a "sweet" deal. Its not so much that it is a trophy to me, as much as it is to my son.

I would have been ecstatic to shoot a 30" oryx at 6 years old. Congrats to your son.
A trophy is whatever you think a trophy is. Don't let other people determine what you are proud of. If it is something that makes you and your son happy by all means have it mounted.

x2 to me its not the size of the animal that makes the trophy but the memory, and for a kid thats a great one!

Congrats. Record books and such are for the birds. If its a beauty in you and your sons eyes make a lasting memory of it. He will appreciate it and you'll smile everytime u see it. Take care and hell of a shot some of my hunters don't drop em that easy

I have a 30' on the wall. Talk about a pretty mount. Everyone that comes in has no idea what a trophy oryx looks like. If they do they don't have even a 30' on the wall so the heck with them.
