Do Gobblers find the hens or other way around? - 02/23/23 09:19 PM

I bought a place six months ago. I have never hunted turkeys. I have 6 hens that seem to live on it. I have never seen or heard a gobbler on the place
So my questions is will have be able to hunt turkey's this spring or will the hens leave the area.

Gobblers gobble so the hens can find them. Hunting is best when the hens turn off and the gobblers go out of their way to look for female companionship.

They usually relocate to favored nesting range during breeding season. If you have it, they'll be there.

Are these birds in CO or TX?

Most of the year Hens are in flocks size depending on population and range. Last years hatch of gobblers are usually together then smaller groups fo older gobblers. The old birds of the feather thing I guess. Early in Spring when they get ready for mating season, the gobblers will sound off and the hens typically go to them. After breeding the ones that will for a gobbler the gobblers will follow the hens around but if the hens are no longer interested sometimes you can get a gobbler to leave a hen and come to you later in the morning or throughout the day.

Turkeys may range over a few miles in a day and depending on the roost location return to the same area or might hit different areas, some seem to be more homebodies than others.

I have seen and called in gobblers that were out in large ope fields up in the day that were by themselves. Sometimes they can be the easiest to call or others will stay out in the open waiting to see that hen calling.

A little off course but as hens stop breeding the Gobblers tend to roam a lot more toward the end of season looking for a hen,

Just a few thoughts from hunting Easterns and Rio Turkeys for about 45 years
