Can anyone CONFIRM ????

Can anyone CONFIRM ???? - 12/22/19 07:26 PM

I was fishing on Lake Welsh yesterday near Mt. Pleasant in Titus county, and I had a turkey gobbling in the woods just beyond the cove that I was fishing. He moved around a good bit and gobbled about a dozen times before he went quiet. I have fished Lake Welsh for many years and have never seen or heard turkey anywhere around the lake while fishing and I have fished it year round. Just wondering if anyone on here is from that area and can confirm that there are turkeys in that area ??? It was exciting to hear this Tom gobble and it gives me some hope that the Eastern birds may one day make a comeback !!!! I am a very avid turkey hunter and I went on point the first time that I heard him gobble even though I was fishing. eek2

I was just reading some about the stockings and the area I heard this bird seemed to meet the requirement for habitat but who knows. I may call TP&W and report the event and see if I can get more info. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE EASTERN BIRD RECOVER!!!!!

We are in Navarro County. Looks like we are right on the line of the far northwest portion of priority area number 3. No Turkey season, but we started seeing turkeys three years ago, and last spring had a hen that would hang around the house all the time. We had two or three toms that would come court her every morning. It was fun to sit on the porch with my morning coffee and my diaphragm and talk to the toms!

I am a avid turkey hunter and I just couldn't imagine hearing a turkey gobble since I had never seen or heard on in about 25 years of fishing that lake. lol

Yep... two sites were approved for super stockings last spring along the Sulphur River watershed, one in Titus and the other in Franklin county. Depending on how many other birds can be trapped in some of the other states, both sites will receive at least 80 birds between now and March. If enough birds can't be trapped they will continue where they left off next winter. The super stockings have been going pretty well since continued in 2014, and people are seeing and hearing birds miles away from the release sites.

I’ve been hunting Titus county farther north and have seen them for 20 years. Have many pictures and phone videos of them while bow hunting. Have killed a few when they had a turkey season. Heard one gobble at lake o pines 20 plus years ago and saw my first east Tx turkey over 30 years ago about two miles west of lake o pines.
