The great debate... How far do turkeys travel? - 03/01/18 03:45 PM
As turkey season nears, and friends send me pics of birds loitering around their property, I ask, how far do turkeys travel? I've read estimates everywhere from 5-25 miles, with hens and Jakes being the most well travelled. Anyone else have some input?

I know that on our 1200 acre hunting property, they travel at least 1200 acres away every turkey season!

On 2 different leases that I have been a part of in Texas and Oklahoma turkeys traveled as many as 5 miles daily. They traveled more when in winter flocks and early spring before the major break up for breeding. This is based on both visual sightings and cams. They tended to follow the same basic route daily.
They traveled approximately 1.5 miles between winter and spring/summer roosts.

Worked with TPWD on a study in the Hill co. Average daily travel was around 3 miles if I remember right. During nesting season we had one hen travel 12 miles from her core area.

Who cares. It’s a turkey. Call em in and kill one. We never see turkey until the spring. They get shot. I like fried turkey better than Quail.
