This Morning the Third Time was the charm..... - 04/06/12 02:16 AM
This morning was a good one. Worked birds from the moment they sounded off.
First bird/birds I worked I had cows move in and surround me....don't really know if those birds were going to come in anyway.
Second set up was going to be a winner. Struck the bird at about 200 yard and he was steadily coming in. When he got about 65 yards from me, I hear pop, pop, pop from behind me and here comes a hen walking about 3 feet from me and she proceeds right in the direction of the gobbler and I never hear him again....Daymmm.....the normal course of nature wins out.
The third set up turned into a Mexican stand off with the bird not wanting to come closer than 65 yards or so. After an hour of this I quit the coy stuff and go medieval hen on him pounding yelps out on the glass call as loud as I can and also with the mouth call. Whaddya know...it worked. He steadily made his way into my set and I finally see him at about 45 yards and for the rest of the way he gives me the full fan, sideways strut, spit and drum show. Right before he attacked the Jake decoy I had put out I couldn't stand it anymore as I was seriously tired of this SOB so I gave him the old #5 facial. It was 11:58 AM.
One of those hunts you remember for the quality of the hunt and the circumstances surrounding it even if it wasn't a giant bird. Barely a 9" beard and only about 3 strands made it that long with one spur that was 1" and the other was broken off.
Hunts like this is why I am sooooooo addicted to chasing the yard bird and.....This morning that third set up was the charm!
