It's Beautiful Man! - 04/04/11 05:52 PM
I spent the weekend calling for my buddy who hasn’t been able to score a Spring Gobbler in four years.
After a slow morning trying to get a bird in range for a gobbler guillotine shot, he grabbed his Benelli and we hit the roads float calling. Not long into our creep, I hit the box call and we get our hats blown off by multiple birds that were no more than 40 yards from us on the other side of a little rise. I face plant into the broom weed and buddy seat drops as the first bird tops the rise. One whine on the call I had in my mouth and four birds gobble in unison as they top the rise. The next thing I know, my buddy is acting like Charlie Sheen’s character in Platoon, capping rounds and screaming “It’s beautiful man!!” He mows down three of the red, white and blue heads peering above the grass. I’m eating dirt to avoid flying shrapnel.
They were all Jakes with 3-6 inch beards but highly exciting hunt and my buddy’s summer grilling menu is complete.
