A general question about TX hunting - 08/18/21 06:00 PM
I am considering a move to the Fort Worth area. My understanding of Texas is that it is almost exclusively private property. So, how do people coyote hunt there? In my State, we have BLM and National Forest land. I go whenever and wherever I want in those areas.
I am not looking for spots. Just an overview of how it works in TX.
P.S. I am not a liberal looking to come to Texas and wreck it. I am 100% pro-gun, pro-hunting, and conservative.

By your statement it sounds like your coming from California. Coyotes in Texas are listed as non game animals and can be hunted year round by any means. There is not near as much public hunting land here as there is in California and those public lands that are here each has it's own unique rules. Some will allow Coyote hunting, some will not. Some will restrict how they can be hunting or have a specific season. Most Coyote hunting is going to be on private land by lease or permission.
Good luck.

Thank you for the link. I will read it. Is it common for land owners to give permission? How does a person go about doing that?

A bit of history: Following succession from Mexico circa 1835, Texas became an independent nation. It joined the USA in 1845. As a result, the USA got virtually no land ownership. That's why so much of Texas is privately held.
Permission to hunt predators and 'nuisance animals' such as hogs probably depends upon where in the state you are. In most areas however, it's sort of like searching for the Holy Grail. As a general rule landowners are reluctant to allow persons unknown to them to hunt on their property. Whether it's for reasons of liability, or they already have friends/relatives hunting there, the reasons vary. But while you can sometimes simply knock of doors or ask around at the local coop or feed store, it's far from automatic.
Best of luck, and welcome to The Lone Star State!

It’s not common to get permission. I’m not saying it never happens but it’s rare

What if he drives up to someones property, knocks on the door, introduces himself and says:
"I am (so and so), just moved here from Commiefornia, don't know a soul, but would like to hunt Coyotes on your property. What do suppose the odds are then?

I completely understand. No one wants more Kalifornians infecting TX.
For what it is worth, I am not a typical Californian. I loathe Commiefornia. I detest liberalism / socialism in all its forms. I am rabidly pro-gun, pro-God, pro-family, pro-constitution, and pro-hunting. Most importantly, I would never vote to turn a free state like Texas into California.
I really appreciate the replies so far.

Well I like you already and if you want to drive a couple hours I’ll let you kill those turds off some of our property. When you come out just don’t tell anyone your from California and you will be better off for it.

Thanks. My son is moving to Fort Worth as soon as his commitment in the USMC is finished next year. My wife and I will do the same.
I plan to replace my California license plates as soon as possible. I am anticipating the feeling of will be like that of someone escaping North Korea. Or, like Andy Dufresne making his way out of Shawshank Prison.

There are places I hunt in Oklahoma over the river that I remove my Texas front license plate before I leave home and back in to park at the hunting area. You would probably be fine not worrying about the plate in Texas, but you never know. In Oklahoma I have had a valve stem twisted off at the boat ramp parking lot before while I was out duck hunting, so I do know those kind of things can happen.

You will be fine buddy, you and your son have a welcome place to kill coyotes and pigs with me so don’t sweat it until you can find places closer to home. Texas has been over run with crazy people from California so you have to look at it from the other side of the fence. I’ve got land in Texas and Oklahoma you can hunt on so long as your not a tree hugging loonie which you don’t seem to be so your good and I’ll supply the beer if needed. We’re all pretty good folks but most of us are pretty stressed out with everything that’s happened in the last 18 months so just tread lightly until you get your feet wet is my advice.

You pay to play in Texas. Don't trespass, respect the fence, and pick up your trash. Start saving now for a lease.

There are lots of coyotes out west and quite a bit of type 2 public land out there. Some good wide open country for calling. Best of luck on your search.

When you get settled in anywhere in the DFW area, check out the 11,700 acre Federal Hagarman Refuge on the south side of Lake Texoma. Go north from Celina on Hwy 289, past the E/W Hwy 82, past the Airport and look for the turnoff to the left that will dead end into the Refuge. Still some public access land on the south side of the Lake & west of Hagarman. Put in for the annual no limit Hagarman Hog Hunt too. If you miss the turnoff, go on up to Pottsboro and turn around.
We lived on the water for 11 years facing the Little Mineral Arm. Find the Game Wardens office near the Elks Club north of Pottsboro and ask lots of ??'s Texoma is 89,000 acres and the Red River channel is 35 miles long. You can't miss it.

There are plenty of Texans who need to learn these rules as well.

You’ll be ok here. Just don’t make the mistake of saying “The way we did it in California.’.
Lots of landowners, like me, don’t want their coyotes messed with. They are the only hog predator out there. And, between the coyotes and me, we are doing a poor job of controlling their numbers.
I would recommend hog hunting instead of coyotes.
