.223 or .22/250 for Yotes?

Well, what's your pick? Is a .243 overgunning? I could use the .243 on other stuff.

I use my 243 on just about everything. The 223 and 22/250 are both good calibers and flat shooting but I don't own either one.

If you are strictly looking to kill coyotes and not collect any fur, the .22-250 is definitely your huckleberry.

We all have different desires. If I was looking to kill coyotes only and I had a 243 already id probably go find some 50-ish grain 6mm bullets and go to town. If I was looking to buy a new gun, id probably buy a 223. Nothing against the 22-250, but the 223 would be my preference.

If you already own a .243, do work! Either of the others is good, too, if you're just looking for a new gun. I agree that a .223 would be flat and powerful enough to do the job and also cheaper to shoot than a .22-250.

.22-250 is the only gun i have hunted with the last several years. Deer, yotes and pigs.

I used a 220 Swift for years, with a 55 gr varmint bullet. Worked great till the pigs moved in. If you go with the 22-250, get a fast enough twist to shoot something more serious like a 60 gr Partition or 65 gr Sierra Gameking. They both work in a 9 twist 223.

I shoot a .223 but really want a 22-250 because they can be devastating for varmints. The factory loads are great and some hand loads are purely catastrophic to critters.

Once I've made peace with not shooting any of my .223's anymore I'll be buying a 22-250.

My pal has a AR-115 type in .223 that I shot the other day. I had been downrating these centerfire 22's and was surprised that the .223 isn't any pipsqueak so I figure the 22/250 ought to be that much more.. On the faster twist for the longer bullets- does that effect accuracy with the shorter bullets? I would use it for coyotes but you never know if anything else might show up. I figure the 26" barrel for velocity.

Hi I hunt coyotes yr around in Arkansas calling them. I use a 204 ruger 223 22 250 and 22 250 AI. I use 55gr Bergers in them. 204 ruger I use a 35gr Berger. I save the fur in winter. So last 2 yrs went to the 204 all the time. Havent went back less damage. Hornady makes a 58gr v max. Nosler makes a 55gr bt for 243. I would use a 70gr bt on them. If I had to pick from 223 or 22 250. Hands down would be a 22 250. But that's just me. I own both in 223. A AR and bolt gun too.

I don't want to shoot any ground hogs or prairie dogs. If a fox or bobcat shows up then I'd take it. The coyote is more or less just something to shoot. How much more will the 22-250 take? The military uses the .223 so you would think 80-150 pound hogs, small deer, etc, javelin would all be okay. Originally I was thinking a .223 might have less expensive brass and therefore cheaper to shoot.
On fox or bobcat I might want the fur- what would you use, a solid?

.220 Swift if you are only hunting varmits. Won't destroy the carcass, if that's important to you.

Of .223 or 22-250 I would prolly get the .223. For minimal fur damage, a light frangible bullet that does not exit. A small hole going in with no exit hole is ideal. Coyotes, foxes and bobcats are pretty fragile and don’t require much to dispatch.

The bullet construction you choose will be much more important than the cartridge type.

As I mentioned earlier, I used that 220 for years, but with the 14 twist I couldn’t use the bullets I wanted for pig medicine. But, with the 223 I can shoot 40 gr Nosler BTs for coyotes (3500 FPS +) and 65 gr Sierra Gamekings for pigs (3000ish FPS). I put 4-16 FFP scope on the 223 and sighted it in for the 65 gr bullet. I can make a few clicks of adjustment on the scope to be dead on with the 40 gr bullet. So I can dial for the heavier bullet and use holdover for the 40 gr bullet. That all works pretty good. Took me a while to figure all that out.

And I should mention that the 40 gr BT will drop a coyote like Thor’s hammer. The 65 gr Gameking is deadly on the pigs if you are selective with shot placement. So the 220 just sits in the safe. Sadly.

.22-250 is the only rifle i hunt with, other than my AR10 .308 if i am going exclusively after hogs.

Very rarely do i have a damaged varmint pelt with the 50gr Remington Accutips. I shoot hogs right in the ear hole and deer right in the neck and everything has dropped right where i shot them every time.

I’ve hunted coyotes for 20 years, first with a 223, then a 22-250, and now a 243. The 223 and 22-250 were both in the 55 grain range and just didn’t wow me with knock down power. The 243 is shooting the 75 grain Vmax and absolutely wreck the yotes.

I have a Tikka Compact lite 22-250 for sale and it is excellent for what you want to do. It has a 20" barrel and is a great walking gun. I have about 200 rounds through it while prairie dog hunting. Best shot was 550yrs. if interested PM me

On other peoples places I use 223 for the cheap ammo, on ours it is what ever I have at hand.

What kind of coyotes are your shooting? My .250 with hornady 55 grain v-maxes jacks them up

It was probably more bullet construction than anything, and I have no idea what I was shooting, prob something cheap from Winchester or Remington.

Pick the one you enjoy shooting the most.

I started off with a light weight Savage 22-250 and it did well. But then went with Ruger American ranch 223/556 with a titanium suppressor. The faster twist in the 223 is a plus and allows heavier bullets. Very pleased with the set up, the 250 has pretty much stayed in the safe. I use the Ruger for deer and hogs as well.

You'll be fine with either one. The most important thing is to pick the one that allows you to put the bullet on the target every time. "Yote don't care what hits him if the round is well placed.

Used to have .223, 22-250, and 243 before the big flood and lost all in a boating accident! All would get the job done if I did my part. Would depend on wheather your saving pelts, all will give them a dirt nap for sure if you do your part... just my
