Squirrels/Rabbits at LBJ Grasslands?

Squirrels/Rabbits at LBJ Grasslands? - 04/26/20 10:06 PM

This summer I was planning on heading up to the LBJ Grasslands for my first time hunting. I'm in Fort Worth so LBJ is relatively close to me, and I picked it because I wanted to do some fishing/camping while I was there too. Is LBJ a decent place to hunt for squirrel or rabbit?
Is there a better public place for small game? I'd like if I would be able to fish/camp while I am there as well.
Thanks so much, appreciate any advice you can give me. I've never been hunting before and I wanted to teach myself, so any tips on small game would be well received. If it helps any, I have a 20 gauge semi-auto shotgun.

I live in Haslet, just a bit south of LBJ. I have never hunted there but know two guys at work that do. You just need to start scouting now, for squirrels look for nut-bearing trees. Even spend some time in the morning or evening watching, you will find them pretty quick if they are there. Your 20 gauge is perfect. Let us know how you do

Most don't kill rabbits that late in the year. They can have worms during the summer. Not sure if LBJ has a squirrel season or not? Better check the regulations?

You can squirrel/rabbit hunt there. Get there early and sit still. Plenty of squirrels.

I have absolutely no idea. I've never been there before. I've actually never been hunting before, so I picked LBJ just because you can fish/camp there. I thought I'd try it out. I'm open to suggestions!

Wish I had some suggestions. I've been by there many times, but have never been in the grasslands. Let us know how it goes.

It’s been a couple years since I’ve hunted there. But I remember those dang squirrels up there when I was deer hunting.

I went rabbit hunting for the first time at LBJ earlier this year and came away with one cottontail! We saw at least one more. The area we were hunting had a good amount of knee-high brush and seemed like a good habitat for rabbits. The only thing I'd say is you'd probably need at least two people, one to flush and one to shoot, in the area I was hunting. It was very thick brush and I'm not sure you'd be able to successfully do it alone—but I'm also an inexperienced hunter, so there's that.

As to the worm issue with hunting rabbits in summer, I did some research and it seems (at least according to Meateater) that while rabbits can have worms, it's not dependent on the temperature or season—they're just as likely to have worms in winter as they are in summer, according to this article: https://www.themeateater.com/hunt/r...e-to-eat-rabbits-before-the-first-frost.

The rabbit I shot was worm-free and delicious!
