Why no pigs at the feeders?

Lots of hogs around, but in the past 2 weeks of hunting I've seen many deer, but zero hogs at the feeders. Saw a group of about 30 hogs one evening off in the distance, and the other morning a big boar trotted across the filed while a little buck was at the feeder. I'd love to have the additional action at the feeders. We have a good all year creek with deep banks, maybe I should put a pig pipe down there? It looks like a hog and deer highway.

Hogs, (like deer) will walk right past corn to get to acorns.

Acorns are low in protein, but high in fat and carbohydrates. Depending upon the type (some are large, some small) an animal can quickly fill it's belly with an easily digestible food source and not have to roam far to do it.

But the difference between Deer eating acorns and Hogs eating acorns is this: Deer will browse around, pick up a fair number of acorns and then move on. Hogs will stay right there until they 'hoover' up every acorn that isn't wormy or soured, leaving nothing behind for anything else.

Just another reason I find it so hard to find anything redeeming about feral hogs.

They are hitting the native pecans pretty hard right now also.
I just discovered one of my trees on the creek bottom with piles of pig poo under it.

Up here, pecans seemed to have dropped already, but they sure do love them, don't they??

Good post, had forgotten about those. I have only a few pecan trees on my property, but you are right, they definitely hit them hard as well.

Unfortunate for me being deer season my hogs like corn more then acorns

OH Man, when the pecans drop, the pigs come out of the woods.

At our property in Bastrop, which is only about 1/2 mile from downtown, the pecans have been dropping for a couple of weeks.
One tree in particular that is less than 75 yards off the road and in the middle of a field is root plowed underneath with pig poo all around.
Here near Red Rock, the pecans just started falling this week and the grass under the trees is noticeably tracked down in a large circle.
I'm going to set up there soon and try my luck!

Each area is different... Here local dogs help keep hogs on the move... They follow the creek... Acorns were on ground when noticed 2 hogs coming inta half ice-cream pail of corn piled up 20yrds infront of a ground blind on cam... After blowing first sit, finally got unlucky for & chillen... Lucky went wee-wee all the way inta the brush... As the experts say: keep after em they'll be back...

Fill your feeder with acorns. Problem solved

They disappear this time every year when the acorns drop.

I've also noticed the hogs disappearing from my feeder near Dime Box about a week ago. A buddy of mine mentioned the acorns and sure enough, they are all over the ground on our property.

How long does this slump in the action usually last? I've got some plans in 2 weeks to do some hog hunting and it would be great if they were back at the feeder. (I'm ready for some more smoked hog hams!)

If the big rains come this weekend you can bet they'll be pushed out of the creek bottoms and out of routine patterns. Rain should also spoil some of the nuts on the ground...... Ha, that last part just sounds funny.

ta THF... Take it ya found place were the deer & hogs are crossing the creek... My old food plot is right by crossing, & corn feeder was in tree line off ta right when facing creek... Used ta have a deer pipe , same thing as the pig pipe, just didn't have chain on it... With the 24-7-365 presure on hogs they learn ta feed more at night, & warm weather has a lot ta do with it... They'll be back, its been over 2 months since seen sign here... A lot depends on size of area you have access to... Set up a cam..

LOL, you think it is a slump and the hogs and deer think it is a bountiful gift from Heaven. Acorns will continue to drop well into November in most areas and the ground will remain saturated into December. As noted by Beckett, happens every year.

Every year at our place we notice about a month before the season the hog numbers at feeders fall through the floor. We don't have any acorns or pecans within probably 10 miles. My suspicion is we feed year round, but the people who hunt around us fill their feeders about a month before season opens.

All of the above and hogs are just nomadic, gypsies....they move around.

BTW...the pecans in our area in north Texas started dropping about a month ago for some reason...prolly just the way the weather was this year.

I have noticed the same thing. I have feeders going in Medina, Bandera, Menard and Mason counties. Pig traffic has almost stopped or has been in the middle of the night. A welcome problem this time of year.

The hogs have returned to my feeder in force... mostly after dark. After seeing the HD video from the last week, I'm not sure it was acorns at all. There are at least 3 sows in the sounder that now have tiny piglets under them. You can see three in this shot. Maybe the sounder's routine changes when sows are giving birth. Obviously it would take a week or so before these little guys could keep up with mom so they probably don't move around as much right after they are born.

My hog hunting plans are looking good!
