Armasight Predator Takes A Bobcat

Armasight Predator Takes A Bobcat - 09/03/15 01:08 PM

I spied this guy as he was heading up the cart trail out of the pasture. I was able to get him to stop with the call, but could not get him to move closer. So when he stopped a second time, I took the shot. This was a severely quartering away shot.

Surprisingly, the 150 gr. Nosler Accubond bullet did not over penetrate. The bullet passed through the right hip, diagonally across the body, breaking the left shoulder, but not exiting, although I suspect the temporary would cavity is what resulted in the partial evisceration of the young tom. .308 may have been a bit much.

For 2015, I have taken 6 bobcats and 5 coyotes off TBR along with 6 hogs and after several years of working TBR, the owner is seeing bobwhite quail back at his place for the first time in years.

I do as well, but I am supposed to put the scope through its paces and see what it will do.

For a second there, when you said "mag," I was afraid this was going to be a caliber war. roflmao

I know he's got to be happy for that. Even though loss of suitable habitat is the primary reason for the decline of Quail in Texas, controlling predators is an important factor as well. Good Job!

Great job! Predator on predator. I've heard a couple of quail this year, but can't tell you the last time I saw one. Probably other critters work on the nest as well.

Nice to see what the entry level offerings can do.

It is, but that is just it, TBR has plenty of quail habitat and resources, at least according to the folks at the Noble Foundation who did an assessment of the property a few years back. Hence the management plan that I am a part of to help reduce predators and hogs on the property.

DNS has indeed done a good job. It hasn't been that many years ago that he really got into hog hunting (and varmints), but he has learned quickly.

To borrow a somewhat famous line from one of my favorite movies: "You've come far, Pilgrim"!

Keep after them!

Aw shucks! blush

I don't know how much it helps. Noble said to reduce the predator load to help make it possible for quail to re-establish. The landowner thinks it helps, so I get to keep my 'job.' clap

Not positive, but what I can see in pic and video, that looks like an old very reliable Remington 788... have one in .243, and .308, great guns, and very accurate...

Re: Armasight Predator Takes A Bobcat - 09/04/15 10:40 PM

Oh man, I did some research on the 788s and they are sort of the K-mart/Gibson's gun of their day. They were madeto be sold cheap, and apparently were discontinued because they were cutting into the sales of the Rem 700s. Why? Because they were such accurate guns. I even found where folks were competing in national match competitions with 788s and placing in the top 10.

No doubt it was by sheer luck that the rifle turned out to be so accurate. Remington never intended for it to be such a performer and it was. There are some issues with various aspects. Some have had the ball come off the bolt. Some, like mine, don't eject spent cases correctly. Others run great. The stocks have a sort of crude shellac job on them that isn't impressive. With that said, I have never spoken with anyone who said anything negative about how well they shoot.

When I bought mine 2 or 3 years ago, it still had bluing on the bolt face. It had been a friend's father's 'truck gun' and shot only a few times. I paid $300 for it and it came with 3 factory mags, one still in the original packaging and was called a "clip." IIRC, the serial number on mine had is made in the early 70s.

Yes, not fancy guns, but they sure shoot good. Have always heard the same story, they were discontinued due to there ability to outshoot the higher priced 700's, which I have a couple and they perform very well also. Still like the 788's, just good old fast action bolt guns, nothing fancy, so don't have to baby them, plus they have a removable mag that the 700 don't have.
