Once in a lifetime experience

Once in a lifetime experience - 02/23/15 12:53 AM

I am sitting here in my living room watching the snow fall and watching freezing fog coming through intermittently.

It reminded me of my deer/hog hunt two years ago in Claude. It really has me chomping at the bit to get out again.

Deer season opened up the Saturday before thanksgiving. I got to the lease on Friday. It started snowing that afternoon. I sat over a feeder that night waiting for the pigs to come. They always do. Well almost always. Not this time.

Got about 2 inches of snow overnight. I was up bright and early. Freezing fog all day, intermittent snow. No deer, no pigs. Hunted over the feeder that night. No pigs.

This scenario is repeated Sunday thru tuesday. I call my wife at about 10 in the morning and told her I might not be home for thanksgiving. You can guess how that was received. My wife being the Christian she is most certainly praying for me to fill my mule deer tag.

About noon the sun comes out, fog and snow go away.

I walk down to the feeder and there is a small three point desert mulie standing there. What the heck, I'm frozen, I ateke the shot. My tag is filled.

My buddy wanted a pig so I walk along the edge of Palo Duro Canyon to see if I can get one. There was a sounder basking in the sun. I got two. Toss them in the trailer.

Hop on the 4 wheeler to go remove some snares I had set out. They were around another feeder. I decided to sit about 100 yards out and watch the feeder for a while.

It wasn't long before deer were filing out of the canyon. My tag is already filled so I just enjoyed watching them.
Two bucks started sparring. A spectacular sight. The bigger of the two ended up with his backside to me and I immediatley see that he is a whitetail. Get off the 4 wheeler and take the shot. My whitetail tag is filled. We don't have a lot of whitetail on the lease so i was surprised. The whitetail had a really nice rack.

The power of prayer or just animals coming out after several days of bad weather? You decide.

This was a once in a lifetime experience for me. 4 animals in as many hours. Never happened before, might never happen again.

Anyone else ever have a once in a lifetime experience like this? Please share.

I know, I know, pics or it didn't happen.

Cool story!

Had a once in a lifetime experience this opener when my son and daughter both shot bucks out the same window of the blind within seconds of each other. Was her first deer ever, so that won't happen again. Was my son's biggest buck to date, so that can happen again rifle

Nothing huge by forum standards, but good enough for us!
