Any coyote calling tips?

Planning on doing some coyote calling this weekend.. or try to. I have tried twice before. First time I set up against a tree at our tank and called in a bobcat and the second was no luck.

Probably will be callin during the day. Our property is pretty thick with brush and dead grass 2-4 foot tall. Mostly only cleared areas are senderos. Will calling on senderos work? Never called in a yote before so looking for any tips.

It's worked in S. Tx for me, I've done quite well calling on Senderos but you've got to be quick. I keep saying I'm going to bring a shotgun but just haven't done it yet. Other than that, I'm a novice and if they aren't coming to a cottontail call I don't know what else to do.

When I call during the day, the use of a decoy like the mojo critter really helps. Be sure and mind the wind and don't over call any one specific area.

Ok thanks for the tips. I have a rabbit in distress call I plan on using. How long should I call before giving it a rest/moving to a new spot.

Try a female distress call, and a territory call as well. I am going to try a 15 minute sequence of calls, hold off for 10 minutes and try again. Personally I will stay in the same spot for 45 minutes or so.

I like to call for 5 min, wait for 5 minutes, repeat for roughly 20-25 minutes. It really depends on where I'm hunting and the potential I think the spot has. What part of Texas are you hunting in?

This is in Duval Co. We definitely have POTENTIAL there are coyotes everywhere. I just have never had luck calling them in; however, I am pretty inexperienced in calling and haven't done it much.

Im pretty certain I dumb lucked into my first one I called for less than a min and had a bobcat show up about 70 yards out. Since then I have never called anything in but have only tried 2 or 3 more times for a short period.

20 minutes is about all I give it too, I bet 90% of my shots have been within the first couple of minutes. I've killed 5 bobcats under the call and all of those have taken at least 20 min to come in. If Duval is anything like Webb, this year might be a little tough with all of the groceries I saw running around during the deer season, which may make some of the coyote sounds work better. I'll be doing the same thing come March.

Our coyotes appear to be out and about. Had them run deer off the feeder a few times and never seen that before. Gonna do our darndest to kill a few. Shot one last week out of a stand, but looking for a better way. Would putting a dead rabit in the middle of the sender help at all?

When I make these trips we also come home with a pile of cottontails, I've tried putting the guts and skins out by the call but can't say it helped, don't think it'll hurt. Like stxhunter said, I think the mojo critter helps a lot. What I've seen happen on a tight Sendero setup is they come flying in on the critter and figure out its not real and are gone as fast as they've come in.

My family ranch is down in Duval co, south of Benavides. I've shot plenty of bobcats and coyotes out there!

If your hunting senderos it can be pretty tough as they will usually dart in and out of the brush pretty quick if you don't have a decoy. If you can't get one of the mojo critters tie a feather on a string to a stick and put it in the ground. By far one of my favorite calls is the burnham bros mini blaster.

Coyotes can be pretty smart and will get "educated" pretty quick if you aren't careful about your setups.

If you aren't hunting a wide open field, stop calling once you see the coyote. Once they are visible you really want them to hone in on the decoy instead of your call location.

When they are close and seem to hang up, "kiss" the back of your trigger hand or arm (assuming your in a shooting position) to make a squeak sound, works good (works on squirrels too)

I always started my call sets at low to medium volume and build from there. 15-20 minutes for yotes and 30+ for cats. 60 seconds for gray fox LOL

I always take the sun advantage over wind, lightening jack call starting out and end each stand with a coyote distress (preferably pup)

I'M also in duval county and have never had any luck calling yotes. I thought it was me but a friend of mine came down and tried no luck and he does the comp varmit calling. I have no idea why theres plenty of them and they've never been called that i know of!!
