Good picture! I still use long springs myself! Looks like you've got that one loaded up with modifications. Nice!

Very good looking cats chaos! Glad you had some success your first season.
Cats can be fairly easy to trap if you have sign of them....
Here's a cat 'toilet'
I always like to use a flag to attract cats/fox/coon, a CD works great. Coons love to get in bobcat sets all the time as well. Here is one of my cat sets...
Up close...I use sticks to 'guide' the cats foot right to the pan without getting any twigs caught in the jaws once the trap fires.

Thank you sir. It was a fun 1st season, lots of beginners luck. I also tried the CD, but never caught anything. I can definitely see how it can work though! It got me into the woods, learned some cool things and made a little cash at the end. Win all the way around. Plus, my son got to shoot the 1st cat. Well, I aimed and he pulled the trigger. None the less, an exciting and memorable moment for a little boy!

Very cool getting the youngster involved. I'd say the only beginners luck is how NICE the fur is on those cats. After you catch a couple and you're trying for em it's not luck lol. How much better did you like the mb550 over the duke or bout the same to you?

Re: Trappers and callers - 10/17/14 03:37 PM
Thanks for the kind words. I caught 2 in each kind of trap. I enjoyed welding and tinkering with the Dukes, I learned a lot about trap basics. On the other hand, it sure was nice to dye/ wax the 550's and get them in the dirt right away. Minus the traps, I made nearly everything I needed. Sifter box, stakes, pack, trowel, stake puller, misc tools, and I have very little experience with welding/ shop work. I also experimented with making my own baits and lures. My kids think it's a blast to find trails and figure out who's tracks are who's after a rain or in the snow. I'm really looking forward to the up coming cold months. We bought some land that's loaded with 'coons, I suppose that'll be my target species this season!

I never found a cat toilet, I looked, but never found one. How far off of them do you make your set? Dirt hole or urine post?

Re: Trappers and callers - 10/18/14 02:17 PM
Less than 20 ft from toilet with plenty if visual attraction to your set.

Nice cats chaos. Where did you sell those last year?

Re: Trappers and callers - 10/18/14 04:22 PM
I sent them to NAFA. Good experience, cool process. Like anything new, I made mistakes and got better with each cat. I think I got the important stuff down last year, looking to fine tune things this season.

For me? I'm down in Corous Christi. The coyotes were from Lubbock area on a road trip.

Re: Trappers and callers - 10/20/14 10:43 PM
i hit the coons pretty hard last year on the 10 acres i had to trap. i caught 11 coons, a gray fox, 11 skunks and an opossum. i did have a big cat/dog break off a Duke 1.75, its crazy how these animals can gain the leverage to bust a chain. I'm still at a loss about that incident. it seems 3 swivels wasn't enough….Anyway, I've stocked up on the Conibear traps this year, I love setting trails and chokepoints. plus, you never have to worry about dispatching the animal, the trap does it all for ya. I did catch a lot on the snare this year as well, mostly coons and that one fox.
