First Hog Hunt

First Hog Hunt - 08/21/14 04:54 PM

Well i'm going to try to get some hogs this Friday night that have gotten my feeder...this will be my first time. I heard if you sprinkle some cherry jello powder on top of corn it drives them wild. I also bought some C-more Hogs liquid as well yesterday at Academy. This will also be my first hunt on my land so I'm double excited!

Any advice for a newb?

I wouldnt change a thing. If they are already coming in, Jello or any other additives may spook them off.

Just make sure the wind is right, and have a good light you are comfortable shooting with (if you dont have thermal/night vision). Wont be able to count on the moon, it'll only be at about 10% illumination and doesnt rise until 4:30 am.

If that stuff worked as advertised, then we would all use it all the time. It doesn't. Hogs certainly like the Jello and other special things people make for them, but there is no indication that it is a particularly good attractant or drives the hogs wild.

The hogs are already coming, as DirtNapTET noted, changes may spook them.

Play the wind and you will be fine. If you drop a hog and don't have other targets, stay on it. They have a nasty habit of getting up after being shot 'dead.' Then they run away and are either hard to find or impossible. If the hog gets up or you think it is getting up, shoot it again. The cost of a bullet is cheap compared to a couple of hours of searching.

Good luck hope your hunt goes well! if they are coming into your feeder I would just continue to use corn I doubt anything else will bring them in better. Corn is hard to beat.

as others have said DON'T DO anything different on your set up and make sure the wind is in your favor. most pig hunters I know don't use any of those additives, just plain corn.

Pigs are smart and if you change anything they will not come in. Don't even walk to your feeder, just get there and setup, be still and quiet. No grunt calls, turn your cell phone off, turn the thermocell on and wait.

One last thing is make sure you are relaxed before you shoot. Your heart will be pounding out of your chest so it will be easy to miss.

Good luck.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the hogs seem to favor corn.

X2. If young hogs come be patient sometime the older pigs will wait to come in. They can be patterned at feeders, if they are coming in consistently stay away until it is time to hunt

You will get your chance. If the property has not been hunted before you could have great success with both Deer and hog in the near future! Good luck
