advice on feeder lights for hog hunting?

I'm setting up a feeder for hogs on a small piece of property, and would like to hunt them at night. I was thinking of buying some feeder lights, but hesitated to buy the ones I've seen at Academy (Wildlife Innovations) after reading online reviews stating that they're junk. Most of the other light systems I've seen cost more than I'm willing to spend and have bells and whistles (motion sensors, etc) that I don't really need.

What do people here recommend for basic red/green basic feeder light that I can clamp onto the feeder and keep lit all night with 6V or similar batteries?

I have a quick question about the setup - the website product description is a little vague. Are the 30 LED units in a single solid block, or in smaller blocks/strips that can be separated? If so, what's the simplest way to rig each strip to a battery and switch - are they already wired to be connected to any kind of switch and 12V battery source?

I'm basically not looking for anything fancy - something I can hook up to a battery before dark and disconnect when I'm done hunting, so I guess just the panel should work.

Been using Wal-Mart landscaping lights taped to T posts (4) and then have Wildgame Innovations Moonshine Hog inside of varmint cage. They have been running strong every night for the last 3 years and lot of hogs

I use 3 landscape lights from Lowes zip tied to the feeder legs. My feeder is 125 yards from the back porch. I've been using these same lights for three years. In the winter they recharge and stay on until three AM in the summer they last until dawn. They're cheap and I've killed over 100 pigs on the same set of batteries. I have a bench rest set up with sandbags and it's impossible to miss head shots at that range.

I purchased a Moultrie Hog Light from Cabelas and returned it after reading review. post in the Hunting Gear section. Search 'Moultrie hog feeder light' Shotgun Willie posted a link to Harbor Freight, thats the route I will be going. Cheap and easy! Scalebuster has good idea too!

My version of a DIY feeder light.

Having bought a couple of "cheap" feeder lights and not being satisfied, I decided to build my own.

What you will need:
Fat 50 Ammo Box
12v Photocell
12v Lawn Mower Battery
12v Landscape light that uses a MR16 bulb
12v Green LED MR16 bulb
12v Solar Panel with shielded wiring
Tube of Black Silicone sealer
10' long 2" conduit
Several 2 1/2" U-bolts
Several 3" hose clamps
T-Post
Various drill bits, 7/8" hole saw, bolts as required

It is a fairly simple design. I put the photocell behind the handle for the ammo box to protect it from squirrels and what not. I also used garden hose washers to shim it to the right depth. My solar panel didn't have a shielded wire so I had to buy that too. I chose a 12v lawn mower battery because it was on sale for $20. I had to order the bulb and photocell online. I got a good deal on the bulbs, so I bought a couple of both the flood and spot light bulbs. They will store nicely inside the ammo can and replacement takes about 20 seconds tops.

You can pretty much figure it out from here. I mounted mine on 2" conduit so I could slip it over a T-Post pretty much anywhere I wanted. It also makes removing or moving very easy. I also drilled some 3/16" plate to use inside the ammo can to reinforce it and a 1/4" piece to shim the box out away from the conduit so the lid will close. You can shim it with washers, just make sure to put a little silicone on them to seal the can up.

Look at the inhawgnito from all seasons feeders. Red and or green light plus set your feeder off. All wireless and can optional come on with feeder settings

I also use the landscape lights from Lowes. They were $15 each. I used four of them since my feeders have four legs. I am only 100 yards but further would be no problem.

They are solar, they come on every night so the animals get accustomed to them. Add green plastic to lens or not. No batteries to swap, they have been going four six months now. They last longer than I can stay in the blind, and they light a 20' area pretty good.

You can buy cheaper and you can buy more expensive, but you can not buy better...weatherproof, atleast 50yds upto 360 degrees(blue, green and white, red about 30 yds), 30 hours between charges, external charging posts, solar and conventional charger capability, manual and dusk to dawn, 4 independently aimable led lights. And the best part is that it's completely portable.

That is awesome, now crack that baby open and give us tour, narrated of course.

I have searched also like you and finally found a cheap light that does not use big expensive batteries and its water proof and I can leave on all the time and return it to the store if it breaks, this Solar Flood light works good I can see my feeder at 30 yards easy its a white light and works good can also glue over a green lens filter

That looks awesome, really well put together.

One suggestion, though, would be to put a fuse on the positive side wire. Bouncing around in the truck or hogs messing with it, one of those wires gets pinched, and it'll go bad real, real fast.

I have one and love it.

What is not shown is the foam on top and the sides to prevent that movement, but it is a good idea and I will add it next time I am out. The latest version I am building has a fuse, all the connections are soldered and I put pigtails on the power wires to allow use of a feeder battery also.

Cool man, just trying to help a brother out. I really like this set up; I've been thinking about redoing my remote activated lights, and I may just have to copy some of your idea.

With, of course, putting the Trademarked by Mass lettering in bold colors on the side.

Where'd you get the ammo can? Local surplus shop near me closed down.

I just put the landscape spot lights around my feeder and I am pretty impressed. I can sit in my recliner at night and look at my feeder which is about 100 yards away.

Ammo can I got at Cheaper than Dirt, I hated to do it, but it was quick and painless.
