Spring Coyotes

So I finally took the plunge into hunting yotes and bought a Primos Turbo Dogg and decoy. 8 setups and 1 coyote later I'm left wondering what is the best calls for Spring yotes?

So far I've relied on the typical Cottontail or Jack distress and the pup distress calls. But with them denning up currently what does everyone find to work best this time of year?

I've always had luck with Lightning Jack, Baybee and Adult Cottontail, and Vole Squeaks. I like to mix in some different coyote howls like Locator, Female Bark Howl, Etc. This time of year they should be paired up so you might try some Male Challenge or something like that and just see what kind of response you get. I haven't done a lot of calling this late in the spring but I'm gonna go out Saturday night and see what we can do. I will update if I learn anything.

I hunt just west of you. As hot and windy as it's been lately makes it challenging. I have a FoxPro and an Alpha Dogg and use both with success along with mouth calls. The Alpha Dogg has several "expert sets" premade in the menu. I only assume the Turbo does too. The challenge set should work. Also like the woodpecker on the Primos. Dying Jack at volume 3 on the Fox Pro works well also.
Some nights they will come to anything, other nights it just don't happen. Keep trying!

Even though it is breeding time, they still have to eat. If all else fails I usually go to rabbit or woodpecker type distress calls. Sometimes though, they just won't respond to anything you throw out. Kind of like my wife.

Where are y'all hunting at around midland?

I hunt south off 158 and 1379.

Break of dawn works best for me in West Texas this time of year with Coyote Challenge and cottontail distress and maybe a little bit of woodpecker to get them to stop. (Fox Pro)
Gray fox still coming in good at night.
Bobcats still good at night where goats are kidding out.

I grew up hunting all between midland and sterling. Lot more animals out there than people think in that area! How far south of 158 are you?

At Sprayberry turn south and we hunt approx. 10 miles south from that point and about a mile east off CR 280.

fox pro is the way to go. i have the wildfire (not the cheapest but not the most expensive. runs about $200) and ive had a ton of luck with it. i usually start with a cottontail and the right before dark i finish off with the locator or the female long hauls. thats just works best for me this time of the year. also invest in a mojo critter. Coyotes seem to like those things.

Seeing how you did not ask what brand of call you should have purchased, I will refrain from telling you!

Just like bar-d said they still have to eat so a distress can always work. That being said the last to I called in responded to howls.
Don't forget about the pup distress! It seems to work year around!

I called in a pair of dogs last weekend using the bay bee cottontail on the foxpro. It was about 6:30 in the afternoon. they came running in hard. Wife killed one at 45 yards with the 22-250.
