Rabbit hunting with a Dog

I have adopted a 9 month old beagle from a friend that couldn't take care of her and would like to see if it can hunt for rabbits.

I grew up in Canada where we use beagles to hunt rabbits and was wondering if you guys did that down here?

Easiest way I have found to break the dog is to get it out hunting with other rabbit dogs. Would anyone mind if I tagged along with them while they are rabbit hunting with their dogs?

I live in Houston however willing to travel to meet up and hunt.

Their are very few people in Texas who run Beagles, why I dont know, its big in Louisiana,Arkansas,and Oklahoma...wish it was more popular down here..

I'm sure the dog could do that; I don't know much about training rabbit hunting dogs, but I had a Dashound that would. I took him with me everytime I went and before long he was right there in the mix. Some mornings I found rabbits on my porch, he would go hunting without me.

I've always been curious about whether rescued greyhounds would make good rabbit dogs...

My girlfriend actually has a rescue greyhound and from my understanding they are sighthounds and in this greyhound case doesn't have the best sense of smell.

From my experience if the dog looses the rabbit in thick bush or it takes a sharp turn they will go over the path they just ran and pick back up on the sent.

Im not sure how well a greyhound could do there

They not big in hunting those rescue greyhounds I had a chat with on lady thats worked for rescue one day she was not to happy that I planned to hunt one of I got it , haha
But ya they would make a far rabbit dog

I got some sight hounds if you got a spot to run them let me know , or if you Intrested in gettin a grey hound I know some guys that has some

Nothing like a herd of noisy beagles going after a rabbit! Havent seen anyone in Texas that does it though. Sorry. My beagle gets on their scent, but won't look up. Dang rabbit will let her get 10 feet away before it runs, and she just keeps the nose down on the scent.

My man, take that dog out to places you see rabbits. Find one and put your pup on that hot scent,or let him see and sight chase it. They will usually chase for a while,then come back to you. The more you take him out,the longer his runs wil be. Pretty soon, you'll have to go pick him up to go home, if he's got it in him.

N LA Beagler I tried taking her today to Sam Houston forest to see if I could spot a rabbit for her to start on. its the closest public land near Houston that i know of. I didn't realize until I got there how much of the land had been destroyed by the fires. Most of the low lying vegetation was all destroyed.

I will have to find some other place to take her

Drive a back road and look for bunnies in the ditches. You will have to wait until it rains for the undergrowth to return to SH. The bunnies will return and be easier to find. Now that I think of it,there used to be a beagle club in Iola,TX. If it's still there,they may let you run your dog. They maight even turn one of their brace dogs out with yours to help him get started. But you can't keep running him with a brace dog if you plan on hunting with him.

Tim9880, my beagle does the same thing. Nose to the ground and runs the whole time. Shes in better shape than i am.
