Dang Squirrels!!

Dang Squirrels!! - 02/28/13 11:21 PM

Is it against the law to shoot a squirrel with a pellet gun if it is doing damage to your house? I tried to find something on the net but could not fine any info. They were coming in the chimney where there was a hole in the mortar, I plugged that up, now they are chewing on the wood siding of my house. They already chewed one hole, and working on another hole! mad

Been there done that. They will continue until you eradicate them. They completely destroyed facia boards and soffits on my mothers house. You might also consider using CB caps in your 22. They are almost quieter than most pellet guns and will not exit a squirrel. Worked great on my problem.

I got a .20 cal sheridan pellet gun pump, I have had for 40 years, it will get the job done, I just don't want to break any game laws. Can anyone point me to the regs saying it is ok to shoot them to protect my house? Thx.

The Havahart traps work well. THEN you can blow their brains out with the air rifle.

I'd be reluctant to shoot in the city if a neighbor can see you.

Some city ordinances treat it the same as discharging a firearm.

They take all the fun out of it, but I'd hate to have that on my record. Some aggressive ADA would probably love to fix it so you can't own firearms.

Get some of those big rat traps and put a pecan or something on it and see if that works

I'm already doing that. Took this pic today, this is new spot they are trying to get in. Those traps are on the roof, chewing on the siding exposing metal flashing, gutter at the bottom.... I got about 10 of those traps all around, it does keep them away.

Re: Dang Squirrels!! - 03/01/13 06:11 AM

That's exactly what I did; big rat traps. Them rascals ate up all my insulation off my wires in the attic before I finally got them all. Then I boarded up all the hole with aluminum. I used peanut better for bait, they just couldn't refuse it, I think it attracted every squirrel in the neighborhood.

Re: Dang Squirrels!! - 03/01/13 08:27 AM

I have used them before and they worked pretty well with some type of nut for bait... Try putting that or as bjan said peanut butter on em and see what happens. Also I have never tried them but I hear those little squirrel snares on tree limbs works as well maybe you could rig them up on your house somewhere

Re: Dang Squirrels!! - 03/01/13 02:37 PM

I started out with peanut butter, but they were setting them off so much in the beginning it was a hassle trying to keep it baited, also what I found out, they wanted in the attic where their home was, not something to eat. So I just put many traps out like landmines and in the beginning they were setting them off just as much, it seems to be working, every day I’m seeing less and less issues with them. Here is where they made a hole and got in, there is no way they can get in w/o setting off a trap, and if they come out of the hole, whack!!! clap

When I first plugged the hole up in the chimney, they went crazy trying to get in.

Dallas County has no closed season for squirrel. You're breaking game regs if you take more than 10 in a day.

Of course, discharging your Sheridan in city limits may not be legal - but I seriously doubt you will find yourself in hot water for killing domestic rodents who are depredating your property.

Thanks I wasn't sure if a pellet gun (air rifle) was a legal means to take a squirrel.

I don't think those rat traps will actually trap/kill a squirrel, but it will knock the snot out of them. Got me a little squirrel fur here.. partyon555

Guy, the question has been brought up many times on the forum. For trivia, pellet guns are not legal for taking squirrels in texas. A .22 is legal for taking squirrels in season of course, but using a .22 with cb caps in town would be illegal as a "discharging a firearm in the city limits" charge. Many citys now even use their own published definition of "firearm" and treat pellets guns same as a real firearm. Most forum members answer the question with the solution of S.S.S. when it involves a nuisance or depredation issue.

And if you do go outlaw, don't go hanging them on your fence.

Re: Dang Squirrels!! - 03/02/13 04:00 PM

I had squirrels in my attic in my old house. I knew where they were getting is so I fashioned a "fish trap" type cone out of hardware cloth so that any left inside could get out but they couldn't get back in. Or so I thought. They'd just rip the staples out of the wood and remove the cone. But it took them a while, and made a lot of noise, so I had plenty of time to get outside and snipe them off the roof with some .177 hollow points.

I killed about 15 over 2 weeks. Never could get them in a trap with traditional bait. I saw them drinking the dog's water so I put out a live trap with a bowl of water in it and caught a couple that way. Those got pellets in their heads.

That ended the issue, but I now kill all squirrels on site. Not going to ever let it get to that point again. I hate squirrels.

I've got a trap I bought that will smash the hell out of a squirrel. It's a tube with a bar inside and a hell of a spring. You're welcome to borrow it. I'llmship it to you and you can ship it back when you're done. I hate squirrels. Did I mention I hate squirrels?

Yeah, but you can never say it enough. grin A couple months ago maybe some of you guys read it, I posted in off topic forum, had a squirrel actually get into my house. Came home and he was above the back door freaking out, but he wanted out, I opened a window and he left on his own. My pellet gun was not working then, I just got it fix here recently, but if it was working at the time, I would have for sure shot it. So this begs the question, if a squirrel illegally enters my house, I should be able to shoot it with my pellet gun, right? popcorn
