Lets talk bullet types on pigs

Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 02/28/13 10:37 PM

We all know you need a tough bullet for pigs and it also needs to come from a powerful cartridge. I'm talking the usual broadside , boiler room placement . But I have recently seen some of theese bonded, big game bullets totally exit the pig with marginal expansion. The bullets I'm talking about are trophy bonded tip and tsx's out of a 7mm mag. But fast expanding bullets just flat don't work either. Question is, is there a "perfect" pig round? I've taken hundreds of hogs with everthing from 223 to 300wm and still haven't found it.

On the tsx and ttsx got to go light and fast. ..I dont see a point in them over .27 caliber

I really like the Nosler Partition line of bullets. I have had really good success with the Partitions.

X2

I like a boolit that does both ends of the spectrum, will hold up to hi velocity impact on shoulder shots yet will reliably expand on lower velocity behind shoulder shots. That is a nosler partition in a nut shel.

Others I have tried and liked are Sierra Pro hunters and Swift Sirrocos(similar to nosler accubond)

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 02/28/13 10:58 PM

Now with nosler partitions lets talk accuracy beyond 300 yrds. I know everyone sets up a feeder at 100 yrds or less but what about follow up shots on multiple pigs, we have all seen them stop or even try to come back in.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 02/28/13 11:08 PM

The closet thing to a perfect round so far has been the accubond. Very accurate at long ranges and holds together well even at close ranges.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 02/28/13 11:10 PM

Just like any other bullet some rifles shoot them very well others may not. My 223 has put 3 in one hole a couple times and always prints samll groups with them.

My 270 shoots them very well also

The accubond is made to mimic/copy the partition.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 02/28/13 11:15 PM

I might be mistaking but the B.C. is different and the accubonds do not have the partition.

Of course I'm drinking crown right now and numbers begin to blur after the third drink.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 02/28/13 11:25 PM

I have shot the 60gr in my .223 and 180gr in my .308. They were both very accurate.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 02/28/13 11:29 PM

The last pig I shot with a partition was about 15 years ago with a 6mm. It dropped it dead. This round is long in the tooth and y'all may have sold me on going back to it. Anything else?

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 02/28/13 11:43 PM

You need to grab some partitions and give them a shot again. I guarantee you will not be disappointed with their performance.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 12:09 AM

Does anybody, honestly feel comfortable taking head shots on a pig at longer distances at night using a spotlight? I know how a lot of us hate them but I also like to find them so I can eat them. Lets hear from the small caliber guys. I've done this but rarely was comfortable with seeing a pigs ear at 200 yards.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 12:50 AM

I've had excellent success with 140 grain Accubonds (AccuBOMBS) out of my .270. They pass through boar shoulder plates with no problem, usually leaving a good sized exit wound...in fact, I haven't recovered one yet.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 01:10 AM

Caliber wise I am liking the 6.5 Creedmoor

Bullet wise the search always continues. What I would like to see is Winchester offer their Razorback XT projectile as a component only.

Also whenever Berger can bring online the Classic Hunter (Hybrid) bullet in 6.5mm I am thinking that will be a great bullet.

Has anybody used the razorback xt's?

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 01:57 AM

I've stuck by nosler partitions for years, have recently been using Sierra SP, 100 gr in 25-06 simply because I had a bunch to shoot up. Was very pleased with the accuracy, and they seem to be a happy medium between expansion and penetration on hogs. Cheaper too!
But then again haven't lost too many with the 257 wby w/ 100 gr barns tsx either! (Or the 120 gr partition)

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 02:05 AM

Ive always heard the perfect hog bullet was a 17gr V-Max lol

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 02:11 AM

I know , the perfect pig "bullet/gun" is the one in your hand but this topic is if you had a choice and could label a specific type of bullet "perfect" for taking a pig at any distance. For me it would not be a 17 hmr.

lol I don't even own one just see people saying all the time on here just how effective it is

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 02:34 AM

I use a Grendel w/ 129 gr Hornady SSTs............ nobody gets up and walks away..... not yet anyhow....

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 02:38 AM

I use the 168 grain AMax from my .308 with devastating results on pigs. Head shot, broadside or quartering the results are always the same dead pig.
Posted By: HBone

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 02:50 AM

I've used sst superformance 308 and had to shoot multiple pigs multiple times. Theese are well placed broadside shots , always retrieved a slug. I have not weighed one but I know they loose a lot of weight on big pigs. Just what I have seen for what it's worth.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 03:02 AM

I have a pic of a deflected .243 75gr v-max straight on head shot followed by a earhole shot. I'll email them to someone so they can post it, I'm posting off my phone right now. Always just heard about this. 275lbs boar.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 03:38 AM

In the 260, I use a Nosler Ballistic Tip (100 gr). In the 270 I use the 130 gr BT. In the 220 I now will be using the 60 gr Partition, if I can EVER find a darn pig. I haven't been using the 223 for pigs since I dropped down to the 40 gr Ballistic Tip, but I did use the 65 gr Sierra GK on a few pigs and it worked fine.

As for placement, most of my shots seem to be in the 120 to 250 yard range, and I don't take head shots at that range. I'll just shoot em behind the shoulder, which is why I wanted the Partition for the 220. The bullet that I had been using was killing them, but not fast enough to keep em from getting in the middle of a briar patch before they died.

Been shooting Nosler P's for 40 years and I've yet to have one not perform as designed or let me down as far as accuracy. Is it better than others mentioned I can't tell ya since I've not tried them, the NP's have given me no reason to look else where. It would be kinda like cheating on your wife.

The Bigger the better, we took one down with a 708 without a problem!

I'm still trying to find something wrong with corelokt. I've seen bullet blow-ups at very close range, but they've all resulted in DRTs...

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/01/13 02:43 PM

In AR plaform, the 95gr TTSX at close to 3000FPS out of a 6.8x43 works for me.
Any decent hunting bullet works pretty well out of my "antique" Winchester 100 auto.

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/02/13 03:06 AM

As has been said so many times-you don't need a premium bullet for pigs! I've used plenty of corelokts and never had a bad result. All 2012 I used 110 vmax in my 6.8, which resulted in lots of dead pigs too. I've seen many a magnum 'over-penetrate' at short range....that still ended up with a pig on the ground.

.243 to .45-70 and lots of up and down the caliber range, all put where they're supposed to go=pigs with sudden onset of rigor mortis!

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/02/13 03:38 AM

My absolute first choice in bullets for pigs, deer, T-Rex, or whatever is the Nosler Partition. This past year was the year of the 6.8 for me though and the Nosler Partition was not a option so I settled on the Nosler Accubond. I have used Accubonds in the past in other calibers with great success so I knew it was a good bullet. What surprised me with the Accubond in the 6.8 was the amount of penetration I was getting while still geting enough expansion for great exit wounds. I took one shot on a pair of 150 pound boars last year and the bullet went through the front shoulders of both and kept on going. Both pigs left massive blood trails as well.

I am completely sold on the Accubond in the 6.8. Its a pigs worst nightmare!!

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/02/13 04:29 AM

My 3 favorite bullets for just about everything are Nosler Partition, Accubond or Swift Sirocco. Though I have tried many others I keep going back to one of those 3.

on board with centexrancher. 223, 25-06, 270 corelokts or just about any bullet with the right shot placement. I have shot 2 pigs with 1 bullet on more than 1 occasion. Pass through the first with a blast hole in the second.

I love the razorback XT's. I've shot many hogs with my .223 AR with XT's. Great round.

In my AR I load 60Gr partitions and they work great. My kids have killed LOTS of hogs with .243 federal fusions. I don't think we've ever lost one they shot with the Fusions.

about 1/2 in groups..I've used about everything else and if head
shot they all work..DD

Re: Lets talk bullet types on pigs - 03/08/13 03:36 AM

I think a well placed bullet works almost regardless of caliber. I know until about a year ago I was guilty of feeling like I needed more fire power than I really did. Distance matters of course but out to 100 yards, I love my 300 Blackout with a 220gr match king at only 1050fps. It seemes to have no issues on hogs up to 150 pounds. I will let you know how it does on a 250 as soon as one messes up and shows himself to me.
