Does anyone use shotguns to squirrel hunt or do y'all think its too much? If so, what size shot?

I've shot a bunch of squirrels with a 20 gauge shooting 7-1/2 or 8 shot. Used to go walk the woods with 2 guys, one with a .22 and one with a 20 gauge. Its all right if you dont mind spitting a little shot out of your fried squirrel.

I have hunted them with a 12, 20 and a 410. However, I prefer using a 22.

I prefer the shotgun... I can shoot up in the air at a treed squirrel without worrying about where the projectile is going to land...

Usually whatever the cheapest low-brass I have lying around is...

I have knocked a few fox squirrells out of tree's with 7 1/2's only to not find them. I think 5's or 6's are a better choice. Fox's are tough.

12 or 20 ga #4

Going to a 410 now if I can get a good deal on a pump auto or O/U

But really love to hunt them with a 22

Shot my first squirrel at 6 years old in 1966 with .410 using number 6. Graduated to a 12 using #6 in 1976. I like using a 22 as well, and back in the day, used shorts. Super quite and super deadly.

Being reared in East Tx. around a bunch of old Squirrel Hunters, I can tell you that most used 20's or 12's and the good ones used
tight chokes, #6 shot and waited on the Fox or Cat Squirrel to look at them over a limb or around the tree and shot just past the end of their nose..thereby hitting the head and not much if any of the body..especially Cat Squirrels which are small to begin with..they are very nervous and won't stay still like a Fox
Squirrel..but if you are a good shot you can kill either w/a 22
rifle w/shorts, longs, or long rifles and even CB caps if you shoot them in the head..Don

I have used 22, but mostly 410 or 20. I use whatever shells I happen to have around.

20 or 12 gauge #6 or #7 1/2

Re: Shotgunning squirrels. - 02/27/13 03:48 AM

I always have used a .22. I reserve my shotgun for birds. I would use #6 with a full/extra full choke.

I always prefered 22, my brother used a 12ga with #6 most of the time.
