Good rifle for medium sized hogs?

Good rifle for medium sized hogs? - 02/24/08 07:27 PM

Hi I'm fairly new to hunting and was wondering what would be a good rifle for a medium sized hog. I was thinking 30-06 or 7mm mag?

Either would work fine. It is all about shot placement. A good friend of mine dropped a 300 pound Russian with his .17 HMR. I typically hunt with combo made up of a M77 .270 and a Super Blackhawk .44.

I would suggest, what ever you use for deer. That would be fine(30-06 or 270). Smaller rounds work just as well.

I have used a Marlin 30/30 for years. It has never met a hog it did not like.

Handguns: I shoot a .357 Magnum or .41 Magnum

Gotta love the 30-30 and those handguns. I have a Ranger commemorative 94 30-30 that is purely awesome for brush country. My dad has a couple of S&W .357s I am keeping for him, and I love them. I also have a .41 mag, which is one of my favs.

30-30 lever action, great all around gun, with new ammo your good out to 200 yards and if you get into a big pod you've got several rounds you can cycle quickly. Any thing 6mm and up with good bullets and proper placement will work.
I killed alot with a 22-250 its all about where you hit them.

I use .308 bolt action for everything. I carry a .44 Super Blackhawk in a Western rig, too.

It's a big, wide world with a lot of choices (well, a lot fewer for us left-handed guys). My choice is the .30-06 and I've never regretted it. Kind of overkill for really small hogs, but it's pretty much guaranteed lethal if I make contact with the target.

I'd like to try a 30-30 on hogs, but I'm superstitious and will probably stick with what's worked.

Any gun will kill a pig, I've killed them with everything for a .177 pellet gun to 30-378 Wythby Mag. If you got a big gun bust them behind the shoulders shooting a smaller gun slid up around the head. I've killed lots of pigs gut shooting them with a 223 so as long as you stay away from their shield you'll be fine with anything you use.

Ok thanks for the input. I'm new to it and still researching etc...

Where's a good place around Dallas to look at a big selection of 30-06 guns at reasonable prices? I was at academy today and they only had a couple. I was thinking winchester 700, maybe a browning, weatherby etc. Also need to find a place that has a good selection of scopes (was thinking bushness 4200, those seem really good).

For a 30-06 I'd go to a Pawn shop most Pawn shops won't even loan money on an 06 or a 270 just because there are so many of them on the Market. When you go into a Pawn shop there will probably be several different brands and models to pick from in either Caliber.

I like the .308 myself, learn the 150 gain corelok and you can stop most North American mammals. I particularly like this caliber on an AR15 frame.

That being said, every hog I've ever shot has been a head shot with a .223 on an AR15 frame DPMS specifically with a BSA Sweet .223 scope and 55 grain FMJ

Try Cabela's, both the new and used racks. They'll have a big selection of scopes, too.

Cabela's is a bit far; is there not a place around Dallas?

Also I have a logistics question that may sound dumb; if I snag a medium size hog (or bigger) out in the field, how the heck do you get it back?

Also can someone point me to some information on dressing them?

I also wanted to ask people's opinions on the taste of wild hog meat. I asked a friend who hunts and he said he's never had it befre. I've tried everything from rattlesnake steak to deer and even turtle soup but never wild hog. I want to make sure it's worth it before I take up hunting that type of game.

Thanks

I have droped 200 lbs hogs with my 22 mag...shot placement is the key....270 or 30-06 would do the job on just about any hog...I have seen a big hog run a long way though even when shot with a 7mm just depends on the placement of the shot and the hog...there was thick lung blood every where and we never found him....tracked him for several hundred yards.

Welcome to THF, MrBishop

Like was mentioned, your deer-hunting guns will be just right - no need for anything special.

And like, BradyBuck said, shot placement is key for smaller rounds. I've used a 30-30 many times for 200 pounders and smaller. If I was actually going for larger hogs I'd use the 270, 30-06, .308, 300 WinMag, etc, etc.

I don't think I'd use bayourat's pellet gun, though...

Re: Good rifle for medium sized hogs? - 02/25/08 04:43 PM

me and everyone else i know shoots hogs just under the ear.

we usually shoot them with .22 caliber centerfires when hunting from a blind over a feeder.

a 30-30 or a lever action .44 would be ideal for spot and stalk.

even a sks would work. any deer rifle is a good hog rifle. the biggest hog can't take a 55 grain slug through his computer

First of all go to Bass pro or Academy. Get a 308,270 or a 3006. I would prefer the 308, opinion. Second of all for the price of you going camping etc., and being so green I would recoomend finding a reasonable hunt the first time. There are lots of people on this forum that offer hunts etc really reasonable and will show you how to take care of them. Once you see what takes place then go to a do it yourself place. I would drive the extra 20 minutes and go to Cabelas by the way.

Where can I get some info on these?

20 miles? I live in Dallas...

I was thinking of ordering the scope online, I know what I want in that area I think, but I'd like to see a variety of rifles. I went to the bullet trap in plano today and saw a beautiful REmington 700 CDL with fluted barrel... just afraid that might be to pretty for being out in the field Might be to scared all the time of messing it up (at $850)

Thanks so much for the info... please let me know where I can find some info on some hunts etc where people can show us some initial tips and stuff. Although I do like camping and that's 1/2 the fun, but I think we need some guidance initially to get going.
