coyotes - 09/10/11 12:26 PM

Hey guys is it normal for Coyotes to come withing 30 yards of your house multiple time in the night. At 4 this morning I was woke up by my dogs barking and I went out with my spotlight and caught 4 coyotes sneaking in. When I put the light on them they ran off. Well with in 45min I was awaken again my dogs I still didn't have a gun ready because I didn't think they would come back and sure enough they was back and even closer. This time I got some buckshot ready and I believe they returned a third time but heard me going out the front to put myself in a better spot to shoot them and they heard me. Is repeated times like this normal?

Times are hard with this drought going on and all the fires. Animals or being displaced and are out looking for food. Make sure they can not get at your dogs no matter how big and mean your dogs may be. And no I've never seem what you described but it doesn't surprise me either. I've had them in my yard several times, They tend to get thinned out when they start hanging around to close.

My dogs are kept in a kennel right up against my house right behind my bedroom. I practicaly can hear them pass gas lol thats how close they are. The kennel is on concrete so that they can dig out. I thought this was strange. The first time showing up no but to repeat it is what got me concerned.

Re: coyotes - 09/10/11 02:37 PM

Sounds like you need to go to bed wayy early tonight, set your alarm for about 2am, and wait for 'em to come back with your gun loaded....solves that problem real quick

Re: coyotes - 09/10/11 02:47 PM

Well the kicker here is the two times that I was able to see them where I was standing doesn't give me a good clean shot. So the third time they showed up I went out the front to put myself in a better spot to shoot and I think they heard my screen door open. So I am tyring to figure out the best way to position myself so I can kill this rascals.

I live well within the city limits of Denton. Before a cattle lease was bought by the city and changed to a city park, coyotes would come into the yard, front and back. Several times under our bedroom window. They took one of our cats for a snack. this was about 5 years ago, though.

they like to mess with dogs , if you ever shot one out of a group you can watch an wait an the others will come back to see what happend , so no its not strange that they keeped coming back you were just shinning light at them wasnt hurting them so they just checking the place out , maybe smelled your dogs food ,
or maybe one of your dogs is in heat

The other thing you can do is bait them. Wrap up some meat with window screening, and then tie that firmly to a tree that is under a light. The screening will let the smell of the meat out, but will also stop them from just grabbing the meat and running with it as it will be tied up. This will keep them in the open, under a light long enough for you to get a shot. Your dogs will warn you when they are out there. Open a window just a hair before you go to bed, and shoot through your screen if you have to-BUT KILL THEM AND POST PICS! Ha ha.

Good luck! I hope they come back! My guess is they will come in the same way. So I would set up to make a good shot possible. The moon should allow you to see pretty good. Of course, knowing a coyote, they will change it up some how! If the ambush doesn't work out you can always try to set up at dawn or dusk and try calling them in! I look forward to the report!

Re: coyotes - 09/12/11 01:06 PM

Well they didn't come back the next night. They came back lastnight. The first two times they showed up I couldn't get a shot off on them. The last time I got one to stop he was about 50yrds away from what I can tell this morning but it was dark and I was trying to hold a spotlight while I was shooting. I was using a 22 and it ran off. My landlord let the dog out so the Coyotes never got as close as they did the first night.

I hope so. I have a small hand held spot light I think I will just tape it to the gun so I want have to try and hold it.

Re: coyotes - 09/13/11 03:45 AM

I looked out my window one time and saw two in my back yard. One was rubbing noses with one of my dogs. But we've had all kinds of stuff come right up to the yard just on the other side of the fence; coyotes, hogs, deer, etc.

Re: coyotes - 09/14/11 02:40 PM

Well lastnight I camped out and not one coyote showed up. I built me a little blind out by the corner of my house kinda out of the but still easy to get out to make a shot if need be. I even put out some cotton balls with doe urine on it to cover my sent. Still not one coyote. I am starting to get aggrivated.

Re: coyotes - 09/15/11 04:15 PM

Give it time. Even with the cover sent, your scent is pretty strong around that area and things have changed. I really feel like they pick up on things like that. Once they test the water a few times what ever brought them in the first time will bring them back. You still may consider trying to call them in. Good luck!
