Hog Ammo Selection - 06/07/11 03:59 PM

What are yalls recommendations on .308 ammo selection? Any input would help...right now im shooting 168gr Federal Gold Match sierra MK. Will these be ok? Or should i try another for my hog hunt coming up? I know it’s all about shot placement but if i need a better cartridge that would be better, then that would be great! Thank you

You got your answer. Hog does not care what you kill it with.

My buddy shot hog once with ballistic tip 308, half of rib cage was gone. I don't make rocket science out of hog hunting and I know some people can. Just enjoy your hunt...........

I don't think it will matter, of course, I'm not a ballistic geru!!!
Heck, I killed one with my little ole 22 rifle. Put it in the ear hole and it's done!!!

usually only takes one and you can be off the mark a little.

maybe it is just me but i like to go pick them up where i shoot them and not have to track a blood trail through the woods and brush at night.

Until about 2 years ago, I used a Remmy PSS in .308 for hogs and used FGMM 168gr SMK's as well. Killed many a hog between 100 and 175lbs anywhere from point blank range to well over 250yds with them. None of them ran more than 30-40yds if shot at distance, none ran at all if shot inside 100yds. Just my experience, I'm sure others will disagree.

Projectile selection absolutely does not matter. Place your shot in the ear, the spinal column, shoulder joint, or hip. In any of those places, the animal will not be capable of moving. My preferred shot is where the spine meets the hip- it requires a finishing shot, but anchors the hog immediately and gives you somewhat of a margin for error. I have killed a lot of pigs with good old fashioned FMJ. Just fight the urge to shoot it like it's a deer and take an anchoring shot.

Ammo I dont think really matters if you earhole em.And believe me,you're gonna want to earhole em at Squiggy's place, especially after you have to track one in the thick stuff.

any descriptive phrases after the number .308 is unnecessary. awesome caliber for hog killing. I've killed a bunch with 55grain 5.56/.223. 6.8x43 next up on the hog killing boom sticks.

Believe me, he knows. He shot the first one and it was on the run. He didn't have a chance to get it in the ear hole. Draggin 200 lbs out of that crap aint fun!!!
I usually just smile and say,"You want it, go get it"!!!! grin
Lucky for them my brother was out there. He went in after it!!!

I use the Barnes Vortex 168 TTSX. Does awesome for hogs, but its not cheap. I have good success with just plain old remington core-lokts 150grs, they shoot about a half inch higher than the 168s at a 100 yards for me.

Here is what the barnes does

bullet I recovered from another hog.

i have been loading lots of .308 rounds to try on them from 150 to 168g

Re: Hog Ammo Selection - 06/10/11 03:56 AM

For hogs I favor the .308 165gr Federal Vital-Shok Sierra GameKing BTSP's in my R25 and have yet to loose one. I have considered switching over to the Barnes TSX load, but these work so well and are less exspensive and easier to find.

Shot a WT cull buck with that load 2 years ago. Talk about overkill......I could put two fingers in the whole it blew out just behind the opposite shoulder.

If they are moving around too much to put it in the ear, then I go for a neck shot. They've all been DRT. Nothing better than walking up to a pig pipe or feeder and hauling them off to process.

.308

.243 (opposite side of head was a MESS)

5.56

Re: Hog Ammo Selection - 06/10/11 04:16 AM

I use Federal 150 grain soft points from Wal Mart...because it's cheap and does the job. The less I spend on shooting a hog the better. If I have the opportunity to be selective then I aim for the head (ear) or neck because that preserves the meat I intend harvest. If it's on the run then just hit it anywhere you can (accuracy by volume). The .308 round delivers a lot of energy on target and will usually anchor (at least temporarily) and give you time for a follow up.

Happy hunting!

Same reason I like Fusion 165-gr. in 308 for hogs. Now I just need to find a place to hunt them. (New to Texas... NE San Antonio).

I use Hornady 168 gr Amax handloads, but just purchase some Barnes to give them a try. The Barnes looks like it will be a great bullet, but talk about expensive.
