Hog hunting on Lake Grapevine with #3 shot? - 05/11/11 03:51 PM

The press release for the Fort Worth District Lake Grapevine hunting states that hogs can be hunted with archery or shotgun. The release says restricted to #3 shot or smaller. It does not say #3 buck - is it a mistake? Anyone ever hunt a hog with #3 birdshot?

I think this will answer your question. Anything in #3 or smaller should be OK

c. Buckshot (any shot size large than #2 shot) is prohibited anywhere on government
property. Buckshot is prohibited due to increased public safety concerns. Shotguns with rifled
slugs are allowed when hunting deer and feral hogs except at those lakes which restrict deer and
feral hog hunting to archery only.

I believe you are currently only allowed to hunt archery so this is a change to the next season.

Deer and feral hog hunting are by archery only with the exception of the special hog trapping permit.

In the same sentence small game are included in that wording for the #3 shot limitation. I think the main intent of the wording is the limit of shot (birdshot) no greater in size than #3 for the small game. I doubt many would intentionally go hunting hogs with #3 birdshot.
But I have killed hogs with birdshot before while hunting other things. It was target of opportunity situations and shots under 10 feet. You would be much better off taking up archery or crossbow over shotgun/birdshot if targeting hogs IMHO.

I have a few questions about hunting public land on Grapevine.
1. Can you set up blinds?
2. Can you feed or set up feeders for pigs and deer?
3. If you have 1 of the 800 general hunting permits, does that you can only kill 1 of the animals a general hunting permit covers? Or does it mean they are issuing 800 permits and you can kill as many animals as the law allows?
4. Is there a decent number of hogs, deer, turkey to actually hunt on these public lands, or are they all really spooked because they have so many people firing at the hip at them?

I have never hunted public land and with it so hard to find a lease, looks like i may be going the public land route. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Contact the corps of engineers office where you are wanting to hunt, they may have different rules for each unit,on a side note,Texas has over 1 million acres of almost free hunting with the type 2 permits and some of these have very high success rates, also these are open hunting areas with no lottery or drawing system, personally I think the word is out on Grapevine and too many people applying for limited number of permits.Head east young man, head east!
