So I found the Beaver Dam

Posted By: scot

So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/20/11 01:09 AM

My schedule isn't allowing me to easily stay out all night and hunt them on the banks so what approach should I take tomorrow in Beaver elimination.

Rip the top and try to actually aim at the beaver with an AR or just start shooting into the dam without ripping the top...

Pipe bomb?

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/20/11 01:15 AM

The dam or the lodge? The lodge's are usually out in the middle of the water, the dam is of course obstructing the waterway.

Guess its a lodge but its on the side of the water.

Blowing up wasn't my first choice as I wanted to have a hat made out of the beaver skin

but if shooting doesn't work I'll have no option but blowing it up.

I normally see swimming the tank at first light....maybe get out there 30 min before sunrise with a .22 lr. Take a pole rigged with a snag line in case they sink after being popped.

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/20/11 07:18 PM

Forget all that crap and put a 330 connibear trap in the run behind the dam and you will get your beaver and without a bunch of holes in the pelt and you can sleep and let the trap do the work. Wish you were closer and would show ya how its done.

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/21/11 12:59 AM

Ok, so I was wrong on my terminology, we have the beaver lodge on the side of the tank. I had not seen it until today.

If I had to estimate the lodge is approximately 8-10' by 15-20 feet. Has Mud/leaves to hold it together tight.

So we were looking it over and I started jumping on it and the durn beaver swam right out but stayed under water and didn't surface....

So with all the said and due to the incredible size of this thing I am going to pick up some traps this week and see if I can't snag a beaver.

Sorry about the explosion ideas but the lodge is surrounded by dry now dead hardwoods so don't think I can make that happen.

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/21/11 03:39 AM

has he dammed up the spill way of the tank yet? beavers hate and i mean hate the sound of running water. if they have dammed it up un stop the the dam right before dark and when they pop out for their nightly rounds one of their first priorities of the night will be to stop the running water. sit close enough and pop them as they swim up. got 3 in one night in like an hour by doing that.-- they hate the running water sound so much that in studies, researchers placed a recording of water running in a dry field close to a known beaver colony and they placed mud over it until they couldnt hear the noise anymore lol

If all the blowing up and trapping doesn't work I have a friend who used to work for Texas Hunt Fish and is a Beaver Specialist. I know bring on the jokes but that is/was his title and job. He would help folk get rid of the beaver populations on their properties. I could give him a call for you if your having trouble.

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/25/11 12:22 PM

Buy you some Belisle #330 super traps and some real good castor lure and you can catch all of the beavers in that pond. You will have to do some reading on how to set traps .

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/25/11 02:37 PM

My newest idea is pretty aggie engineered. Since last time when I jumped on the lodge the beaver swam out the bottom. So I figured bet a big ole net and place it at the bottom of the lodge. The proceed to bump fire the ar into lodge scaring each and ever beaver out of the lodge into the net. Then I should have a net full of beavers.

Tannerite would be fun but its way too dry out there right now. Don't much want to burn our farm down. If they lift the burn ban I'm all for it.

An expensive, but awesome alternative.

Buy a dozen full grown standard dachshunds and let them loose near the lodge, an epic battle for sure.

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/25/11 09:42 PM

I had never seen a beaver in my life. Saw a nutria while varmint hunting in Katy last year. Shot it and it turned out to be a beaver. Felt bad so I had it mounted. They have a smell that I will never forget...and have floated several creeks since then and can pick out that scent when near beaver inhabited areas. unmistakenable. I'm assuming its the waterproofing oils on them that cause the smell. sick

sneaky beaver! Stood on top of the lodge for 20 minutes jumping up and down with a shotgun and AR. No beaver. Then started taking the lodge apart but them things are pretty good engineers. After about 20 minutes of pulling sticks off of the lodge I gave up and went after other varmints. Plan to finally make an evening strike as all attempts thus far have failed.

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/28/11 09:20 PM

I thought I had it all figured out too. There are about three entracnces into the lodge plus the water entrance. I got extra smart thinking I'll just start around the door and tear my way into living area. Except these must be some Gifted and Talented beavers because as soon as I opened up the entry way there were three very large logs blocking entrance into the rest of the lodge. They have some sort of trap door situation becuase I couldn't tell how they got in from the door to the water.

I will post some pictures this evening as I don't think you can appreciate just what I am working with here.

Re: So I found the Beaver Dam - 02/28/11 09:40 PM

Is it in an area where you can light the dam on fire? If so, light it and wait for them to come out. Maybe you could smoke them out somehow.

I'm a slim 6'1 220 and it goes about three times further back into the bank. The kimber was poised and ready for action but I was far too slow on the draw to get it done.

I don't know about the covering a recording part confused2

A buddy of mine has them on his place so last night we went out and tore a hole in the damn to let water out about two hours before dark and sit back and waited. Right at sundown we had several swim up and start to repair the leak. I got this one at about 15 yards with a shotgun used a red XLR-250 light and they never saw us
