No one posting about quail? - 11/18/21 07:36 PM
Guess that tells the whole story,,, in N W. OK>. on my lease they found 6 coveys Sat. and 1 on Sun.(weather got hot on Sun. ) ----- Has to be 12-15 coveys to make the drive worthwhile for me. 8 hr drive from Temple. Several years ago we would find 30 coveys per day. One weird thing, they found about 200 sandhill cranes in one field,,,, we'll see if they come back .

They are also scarce in fire ant free areas.

I've been out among them this week. Scenting conditions are tough and the dogs haven't been finding many birds. I see sign (namely tracks and roosts) where I expect to see them. I sure don't think it will be a banner year. In fact I'm inclined to believe numbers will be down here in the OK panhandle where I hunt. I'm still going to try to get as many hunts in as I can because my oldest dog, Ellie Mae, only has so many more runs left and I want her to get them while she can.

A couple of good frosts or a good freeze and folks will find more birds. Not a banner year but areas of the plains got good rain and wont know how many birds till some of this tough cover gets down.

Me did Matador on opening weekend, but it was sad. It was 70 degrees by 10:00 and there was not much moisture in the air.
We saw a few signs, but did not move a covey before it got too hot for the older dogs. Out of about a dozen groups out that day, I have only heard of two the bagged birds.

there's quails in Comanche Co. that I never knew existed
I then released a few to help the population and they seem to
do well.
If you want quails , spend some money with hunting friends and
purchase some for release. They'll recover. stocking should
also have feed and water stations set up

Haven't seen or heard a Bobwhite in my area of Central Texas between Lockhart and Bastrop in many, many, many years.
My parents and a few neighbors raised them and turned them loose regularly but alas...none to be seen anywhere anymore.

I kept pen raised quail in a Johnny house and sponsored NSTRA trials for over ten years. Only saw two clothes, both in the same day. Both were led by roosters.

Right down the road from ya, and never knew them to be there my whole life.
