Pheasant hunting panhandle

Pheasant hunting panhandle - 07/28/21 04:17 PM

Haven’t went to the last few years, but would like to go this year.
I have my own dogs, and wanting to do wild birds only.
I just checked with the Nazareth Lions club, and they are only offering hunts to returning hunters from the last two years. The last time I was in Hart, the bird numbers were real low.
If anyone has other contact information they can pass along, it would be appreciated.

I'm interested in this, too. I used to hunt around Halfway (west of Plainview), but there haven't been any birds in years. All the farmers are raising cotton instead of corn, and there's precious little CRP land.

I'm with y'all. We hunted with the Lions club in Hart for years, but it's just not worth it anymore. Would love to find a place north of Amarillo, any contacts would be appreciated.

I haven’t given up, but so far not much luck finding a place in Texas.

Something I have wanted to do since I was a Young man and that was years ago (many). I still would like to try it and have considered Nebraska, South Dakota. Just not sure how to go about it. Daniel

I use to put together a Kansas pheasant hunt. I met a lot of great guys over the years. A couple of us went to South Dakota together.

Not much farther to go to Kansas depending on where you are. We went there last year and it was awesome. This is who we used. https://www.10gaugeoutfitters.com/

I tried the panhandle 4-5 times and none of them were close to what Kansas offered.

I’m not looking for a guided hunt, over someone else’s dogs.
I have three bird dogs of my own. I’m not even expecting to shoot a limit in Texas, with the bird population we’ve had for years. It’s just a long drive (9-10 hours) to run dogs on birdless fields.

That’s what I’m hearing.
A friend of a friend has a ranch up there.
If he has a huntable amount of birds in December. I’ll go, and just pay a gate fee.
If not, I will pass on going to the panhandle this year.

Yes, TTS loads are nasty. Before tts I hunted them solely with 410 for over a decade, that's before I out smartest my self and thought I needed a 12, then finally settled on a 20 and now moving down to 28ga. I'll probably end back with a 410 before to long.

My number one pet peeve is someone ruining a pheasant with a close flush using a tight choked 12. It gets my blood boiling

I have a new 410, but haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet. My ear is healing from surgery.
I just wanted a lighter OU in the field.

TSS sorry. tungsten super shot.

Not cheap, but pheasant limits are pretty sparse anyway. TX is 3, Okla is 2 etc

If you hand load you can order the shot from over seas pretty cheap from what I’ve heard.

Yes, Federal, Boss etc all have them. It’s heavier/denser then lead so you are looking at 7-9 shot size. Some would argue it over kill above 28ga. I like it because it’s one hunting ammo for upland to ducks.

Where do you usually find it?
