Finally, a trial placement

Finally, a trial placement - 03/08/21 04:42 PM

Field trials are much more enjoyable when you have a dog that’ll handle well and play the game. Got my first placement at a NSTRA amateur trial this weekend. Just have to work on a couple issues so we can beat those bearded dogs.
Notice the walking bird in the second pic.

3, check out the condition of the cover. The birds were limited on hiding places. Lots of them along fence rows at the OB markers

I've been to trials where they had to break up square hay bales.

Nice Mike! That low cover is kind of crazy, but easy for the pooches to cover it quickly, that's for sure. I have been bass tournament fishing of late, and the way the past couple of tourneys have gone, probably would have been better off running NSTRA.

I'm sure a lot of cover was lost due to the freeze.

At trial in Winters this weekend. First dog DQ, found 2 birds in first 4.5 minutes. But took them both out. Second dog runs brace 15 this afternoon. Hoping for better luck.

We cleaned up the bird field.
Dang dog decided retrieving the bird just out of reach, was good enough that day.
He was FF after that trial.

I dreamed last night that I was getting ready to run Cookie in three NSTRA fields. A fried had run her the previous day while I was judging and found only one bird.

Here is a little trivia for you. Bobby Clark had several national champions. He. Is the farther-in-law of Big Billy Kinder who also ran dogs in NSTRA.

I’ve met Bobby Clark, nice guy. He bought my dinner one night after a trial.

The last few braces have not been so successful. But it beats sitting around the house.

I skipped the trial at Maggie’s place in Iola last weekend. Dogs were not holding in the last trial, one was DQ in 4.5 minutes for taking out 2 birds. It’s fun, as long as the dogs cooperate. When I have another open hole in the kennel, I’ll get a trial only dog.

Been my experience wild bird dogs don't respect pen birds and yes they know the difference. Just my opinion.

The Multiple field trial champion is not always the best bird finder in the box. But usually the best behaved. A buddy of mine had a fine pair of pointers and one had 4 NSTRA champion titles. She was a great all around dog that did it all. Her bracemate never made a trial dog but found 4 Wild coveys to one on the champ. Guess which dog I liked the best.

Re: Finally, a trial placement - 04/23/21 12:52 PM

My last dog Cracker broke out fine. Never saw her bump a bird in the fired. Back from a half an acre away. Found her share of wild birds, but never found close to her share at NSTRA. I gave up and only hunted her on wild birds.

I stayed in NSTRA and judged a few trials, but my heart simply was not in it. I gave up NSTRA all together.
