How do you carry your shot shells?

How do you carry your shot shells? - 08/18/20 12:39 AM

So, I have always carried my shells in my vest pockets while bird hunting. But I was looking thru the new Dogs Unlimited catalog today and I saw a Leather Shell Belt (item # 1049070-M .. http://www.dogsunlimited.com/i/1614/shell-belt-12-gauge.htm) & it got me to wondering if these are any good and if anyone has experience with the Shell Belts?

I have one that is almost identical to that one but its almost 50 yrs old. I keep it hanging around for nostalgic reasons only. it was handy enough to get shells quickly but always wanted to drag my pants down. since I went to a vest 20 years ago I never looked back

Pass. Keep them in the pocket of my blaze orange vest. Keep the used hulls in the game bag of the same vest.

Positive: If you have 2 or 3 (or more) different loads/shot sizes you can arrange them for easy access on your cartridge belt.

Negative: Personally, I found the cartridge belt less comfortable than carrying shells in my shooting vest. But the main reason I switched over to a shooting vest is because I seem to often hold my gun against my body and I found that the shotgun's wooden stock/ and/or forend would sometimes rub against the exposed rim of the cartridge brass thus leaving marks on it.

I like that shell belt! I've been thinking about experimenting with carrying shells like this. I've always just carried them in the the game vest pockets, but I've seen some guys in Montana carrying shells like this. It reminded me of old west gunfighters or African dangerous game hunters, I guess I just like the nostalgia!

A few in the shell pocket of vest, the rest of the box sits in a cubby on the mule dashboard.

Seems as if it would take a lot of extra time to put the hulls in a shell belt.

Made my own web belt with buckle and shoulder straps, bag on left side has a pocket with a divider. New shells go into inside pocket, empty's to the outside pocket. The game bag is on the right side. When i sit, stand, walk everything is on the sides not in front . Don't like shells hitting the front of my legs or game bag on back.

Doesn't really matter, if you ride in the Mule with him driving, you aren't going to live long enough to shoot any birds. He's a mad man. taz

Carry mine in one similar to this:

Loaded on right side, empty hulls go on left side. Been doing that for almost 30 years.

I had a fanny pack that I sewed shoulder straps. A lot of times it is too hot for a vest. Safety pinned on the game bag. I want the bag removable so I can check for fleas, etc.

Reminds me of hunting with a Yankee. I said don't shoot them while they are running on the ground. He replied, I'm going to wait until they stop.

I use a shell box holder that's used for trap or skeet shooting. I keep the box closed until the first 1 or 2 rows of shells has been used. It attaches to my belt. Game vest for empties.

GI issue web gear, the ammo pouches hold my shell, I also have the butt pack that holds the birds, the canteen for water. My set up is over 50 years old. Unlike a vest it is not hot, the suspenders take the weight off the belt. .

For the past seven years I have been using a Wing Works strap vest. Final Rise makes a nice one as well.

My carrier has two pockets on each side and a bird bag in the back (like those above). #9s go in the left pocket and #8s go in the right. Hulls go in the right.

Yes you can’t see the pockets. They are folded under the bird carrier part. Here’s one with me wearing it:

I borrowed a Filson that looked a lot like the outfit that NP has, I had forgot my belt. The suspenders were awesome and beat the heck out of a belt. I asked for one for Christmas but Filson is all out of stock.

My dad used to say the same thing about his uncle over in Graham. He liked to hunt them after a snow. Said all you had to do was aim in the center of the donut. The good ol days when quail were as thick as sparrows at a feeder! LOL

Filson chaps are really good too. Tin coat pants and coat are too stiff for me but you could probably run through razor wire and not get cut. Really good products.
