Day lease for Quail?

Day lease for Quail? - 08/13/20 03:04 PM

Just moved to the Ft Worth area. Are there any day leases available for Quail hunting? Where I moved from, we could knock on the door of the ranch/farm and ask for permission to make a pass thru the property and most of the time they approved us in a certain area. Maybe those days are gone forever down here. Thought a day lease might be something to inquire about.

Decide where you want to hunt and call the COOP in nearby towns.

I moved to Texas from Arkansas and had the same question. There were a few years ago. It would be tough to fine any today.

Normally on a day lease the 'hunters' are trying to kill as many birds as possible to get their money's worth ,,, as opposed to a season lease where they normally limit their killing because the birds have to last for 4 months. So by the third or fourth time the land is leased out for a day hunt, there are very few birds left.

You might look up the NSTRA schedule in your area. They open the fields Saturdays after the trials.

not legal--you need a private hunting license for the property and all the birds have to be banded with the number of the license and have documentation showing provenace for the birds.
It is illegal to release game birds without this.

Go to the USDA office in the county you want to hunt and ask folks there if they know of any landowners with improved pasture or crp that they would be willing to lease. There are often people who have inherited a 1/4 section or so that will let you hunt. You can find landowners with a couple of coveys who will day lease but it takes a LOT of legwork. I hunted with guide in the Falfurrias area some years back who did this. He had a string of 1/4 secition pastures and drove you from pasture to pasture. We drove and loaded and unloaded a lot but he moved a lot of birds.

wardens will give you a pass on covey house birds and training birds if you can show they aren't wild. Like a receiipt for their purchase or some way to prove you raised them.

They will get you for releasing to hunt or to propagate and area.

Mundo speaks the truth. Can set them down anywhere in Season and shoot limits and can only use, even dog training, if they get sticky needs to be on land with the Private Bird Hunting area. We got the place
