I go 20 for all my covey birds and use a 12 on Pheasants. I use 1 oz. #7 1/2 in the 20 and a 1 1/8 oz. #s 6-7/1/2 in the 12.

Again .28 less weight to haul around. I am probably older than chet and can hunt longer if i carry less.

I have always used a 12, but time is a villain and a thief... and I'm really on the fence about picking up a 20 gauge in the near future

Starting out in Nebraska with my 16. Down the next weekend in Kansas I might start with the 28 or 20 who knows.

I use 20 for everything except ducks. I don't want to take my nice SxS into the duck swamp.

Re: What Gauge - 10/26/18 08:22 PM

For quail I like the 28 but also use 20 and 16 at times. The 16 is an old Browning A5 that was my uncles quail gun, bring it out in memory of him on some hunts

Re: What Gauge - 11/15/18 11:37 PM

28 on Dove and Quail, 20 on pheasant usually but do break out the 16 ga.Model 12 for old times sake....it “shoots where I look” a bit better than the others.

Re: What Gauge - 11/16/18 05:36 AM

I have them all and shoot my 20 the most of the time. Quail have been so wild and skittish and getting up so far away, that I admit that I pulled my 12 out a couple of times last year. I have decided to just shoot a camera this year with the number of birds down so low. I am going to try to take a bird only if one of my young dogs does it all right i.e. point and hold and lets me flush.

I think 28s are overrated. You can buy 20s at 5 1/2 pounds
