Chickens in NE

Chickens in NE - 10/09/18 05:36 PM

We recently made a trip to NE and found a few chickens and sharpies. We hit the weather just about right and found coveys with good bird numbers. They will probably start to gather soon and it could become a bit more challenging. The cover in the Sandhills Region is something to behold because their moisture for the last 10 months has been significantly above average. We walked a little over 40 miles in three days and had decent success. We found the crops containing green leaves, alfalfa, hoppers and sand cherries (rose hips).

That really strikes home with me. I grew up hunting birds in western Nebraska, and sure miss it. As kids we would get so worked up over opening day, we could hardly sleep the night before. By the time we were in high school, we would keep a shotgun or two in our cars for hunting before or after school. My mom would clean any birds we shot in the mornings (but she drew the line at ducks...couldn't take the associated smells).

That is really cool. I haven't shot a chicken in years.

We were in the hills and temps ranged from the 40's to mid 50's. Did not see any snakes. We saw a few pheasants but no quail. Mostly pasture land with a few hay circles.

Nice work. We were up there earlier this week (later than I like to go), and the birds were definitely flocked up. We saw probably 100 birds over three days, but man were they spooky. Not much dog work, and even fewer shots. If y'all plan to go, I definitely suggest a September or early October hunt. It may be warm, but you can spend the afternoons dove hunting or sniping p-dogs.

Beautiful, beautiful country though!
