Anticipation is keeping me waiting...

Anticipation is keeping me waiting... - 08/16/18 11:54 PM

It been another long hot Texas summer but September is just a couple weeks away now. I've been thinking about bird dogs and shotguns all week. So what breeds of bird dog will you be putting on the ground and what's your default shotgun? I'll start. Cricket is my Pudelpointer that just turned 2 in July. He did a respectable job as a 1 yr old and we have done some training in the offseason. He has shown me some good things and I'm excited to see what his 2yr old season brings. I've been shooting clays all summer to hopefully hold up my end of things. Most days I will be carrying a 28" Citori Lightning 20 guage.

I'll be running two real green pups, one 8 mo. and the other 9 mo. Have one three year old that's broke so will be a rodeo with some bird hunting. Shoot a O/U and a semi auto both 28 gage. I could use them both at the same time and wouldn't make a difference. Hope to pick up a pup in Dec but too young to mess with much this year. Have two with a handler and by the 1st of Jan I'll be wishing they were home.

My Brittany will be just shy of 2 when season starts. He is recently back from 10 weeks at a trainer and looking darn good. The trainer thinks he would be solid to hunt test and would make a good showing in a trail, but I'm not interested that. His only test will be to hold steady on wild birds...if we can find any this year.

After a year on the injured bench with a broken knee, our joint interest GSP will be back on the ground again. He is running well, but we need to do more endurance conditioning with him, before season starts.

I'm considering taking an O/U for quail the first time this season. I'm a Beretta 391 guy, but I recently came by a CZ that sure is light, fits well, and seems to shoulder faster than my Beretta.

I will be running 4 broke, I hope broke, pointers. And I have a hard time making up my mind on shot guns, beretta 686 20 guage, franchi 48 28 guage, citori superlight feather 16 guage, benelli montefelto 20 guage, citori 28 guage. Think I will start with the 16 guage weighs in at 5.9 lbs. Wife says I have tooooo many shotguns.

I’ve got three nice dogs going into their third season (Two French Brittanys and a Shorthair), and one two yesr old Shorthair a buddy gave me a few weeks ago that didn’t even know his name. He’d spent two months with a trainer I’d rather not name last year and every time we ran him we lost him. He now has HERE, down like a champ and we’re working on WHOA. He has a a good nose and found some bird last year, he just needs some control. I was going to finish him for my buddy but my youngest son took up with the dog immeadiatly when he brought him over, and my buddy said just to keep him. Other than the times we ran him last year I don’t think he’s been out of a kennel. My buddy will get to hunt with him and won’t have to feed him. I need more freinds like that. I’m shooting the same Mod/Imp Superposed 20ga I’ve always shot. I’m fired up for this season. We have bird on every place I hunt so far.

I am also ff two of my pointers. My year and a half Blackhawk guardrail male has acquired a taste for quail.

Same as every year with this girl. She’s almost 8 now - seems like every year is becoming more special. I can’t wait.
