Ol Tex is coming along nicely

The EP that I got from Walter at Poetry shooting club (TEX) has been at my trainers (James Collier) for a month to learn some leash manners and get him Whoa broke. Well, as usual James has worked his magic with this dog. It is a complete night and day difference. He is 2 years old and hadn't been worked much at all I let him hunt on a couple of trips this past season right after I got him and I could tell he has a great nose, but he just wanted to bust through his birds. I talked with James and let him evaluate Tex and we came up with a a plan (basically start from the bottom like starting a puppy) He has given me a great foundation, now if I can do my part and bring him on along this summer. Thanks Bill. This man trained my first dog around 25 years ago and has trained several for me and a buddy since then and he says this will be the best bird dog I have ever owned. Big running sucker and tough as a boot.

So how does James whoa break in his training

How big is big running

Is that a picture of the head of a quail at the bottom of the picture? That and the lose lead would indicate that the pup is pretty far along.

I only hunted him a few times, I don't know if I would still have him if it weren't for E collar & GPS. But he figured out what we were doing pretty quick and learned to stay with the group, he just likes to always be 100 - 200 yds ahead. He is going to run as big as I let him, I can tell you that.

That's the same way about some of the great NSTRA pointers. I've seen AA dogs stay in the field.

My yellow rose gyp has the same range, All you can stand.

So let me ask you this. You get your dog back and he is solid on pen raised quail and or pigeons in a controlled enviornment. Now your running him on wild birds a whole different story. I can’t imagine the dog is going to be solid on wild birds right from the time you get him. Is he? If not how will James tell you to reinforce what was taught on pen raised birds.

Especially if the dog runs big enough he is out of sight and busting birds

I would think most trainers would encourage the owner to participate in the training so they know how to handle the dog themselves

All pups are different in this area. I have seen and had some took up to 2 seasons. I've had a couple that pointed the first wild covey they ever found. My HTA pointer pointed over fifty coveys her first year and only bumped one. There's a difference in bumping and flushing. A lot of very good trainers don't have a clue about pups on wild birds.

Place I hunt in West Texas the blues hold just like the bobs, because there’s cover. The first covey my pointer gyp pointed in her first season was a covey of blues

You asked how he whoa breaks them. I don't know. Now your asking a completely different question. Yes we went over what I need to do to continue training and how to correct him. If you had read my original post you would know that. But that has nothing to do with how he whoa breaks them. Do you have the ability to say "nice looking dog" or "congrats on getting him on the right track"? Instead of trying to find anything wrong that you can?

I dont see a difference between whoa breaking training and continuing whoa breaking training for reinforcement.

No one ever gets a pup back from a trainer that is 100% whoa broke or even steady. . But the foundation has been set and you have to apply the reinforcement in the field when the breach of manners occurs. Kevin has years of experience. He knows what to do and when to do it.

CCBIRDDOGMAN, It's always exciting to watch as a young dog learns it's craft. Especially when you see talent and recognize potential. Good luck with the offseason training as you bring him along. I like the way he is put together. Looks like he should be able to move.
