Headed to NorthWest Kansas

My brother and I have access to private land in Tipton KS. Farmer has been calling me and urging me to come hunt but I kept waiting for my brother and vice vesa and deer hunting. Long story short we didn't go and finally meshed schedules for next weekend. So I call the farmer to let him know we are finally heading up and he instantly apologizes. He sold a few hunts and let lots of family friends hunt it. Told me its not worth the drive in his opinion. So we made the time to hunt so we will.

So instead we are headed to northwest KS to hunt public land. I always wanted to see how I could do on late season public land pheasant. This will be a challenge no doubt. I just hope to find a place with birds to get a fair chance. I was hoping someone on here might be able to help me out in a place to try or at least some strategies on late season birds. Im a quail hunter mostly so I'm pretty green. We chose to hunt North West cause of a little research we've done online. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure about Tipton however I hunt in Goodland KS a bit south and west. This year was a pretty good year with a reasonable population. You should find plenty of state sponsored walk in property to hunt. This time of year the birds seem to cluster around abandoned home sites with thick brush and cover, They never hold well and if you find them expect an explosion of birds out the opposite side of your entry. Good luck KS is certainly worth the effort!!!!

I have not done a ton of WIHA but Flashprism has covered it pretty good. I had some luck on some WIHA 8 or 9 years ago in between Hill City and Colby. I would recommend having 3x the places marked and on your list as you think you might need, as you drive up and get surprised a lot. Dont slam car doors, dont be yelling "Roxie HEEEERRRRREEE" etc. I would try and find the places on Google Earth, this time of year you are going to need Little Blue Stem or other native bunch grass in CRP to hold birds and help them if there is a lot of snow on the ground. Most of the grain is depleted and gone at this point I would think. Cattails are good late season as well.

That's what our farmer said almost to a tee. I appreciate it. I've been scouring the pheasent forums and checking out places on google earth. Just in prep for this hunt I realized how lucky I am to live here in Tx and have lots of private access. I see on the forums tons of guys are complaining about birds getting up way early. I'm not sure what to do about that other then be very quite. I've mentally prepared myself to be ready to walk many miles. If I can get one rooster on this trip I'll be happy. Last season I was blessed on the opener here with a wet snowy morning. The birds held better then quail. I ended up doing really well. I'm hoping for some snow again.

Hunted up in the North to Northwest Part of the state at the end of the year and it was all hit very hard. SD and ND didnt get favorable outlooks from PFE and all the folks from SD,ND, MN, and Texas were up in North Cnetral Kansas chasing birds. There was a ton of traffic then and only imagine more followed. We would push fields and it was a ton of hens to very few roosters the quail coveys were split up and not in big numbers. I hope you have sucess but it will be a lot of work you will even kill a few birds but it wont be like a good year.
