You will drive through some good Texas Panhandle wild pheasant country, headed to S. W. Kansas and eastern Colorado. And you may end up driving all that way (in some cases) shooting at well feathered pen raised pheasants.

Let's get some wild Texas Panhandle pheasant sighting or reports coming in.

Pheasant numbers pretty much all over the panhandle are less than average, but better than recent years past. As always, isolated pockets with plentiful birds exist.

I would not spend much time in the Panhandle.

I'm in the far northwest panhandle and numbers are pathetic here! I am a farmer and am out in the fields everyday and the numbers I've seen are worse than bad. In the last few weeks that I've been cutting corn, I haven't flushed more than a handful. I personally will be hunting Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado! Although those place are substantially closer to where I'm at!

Find me another place with an 8 acre flight pen. You'll never know you are hunting pen raised birds. And to be able to hunt no limit for $240/day it can't be beat.

Re: Looking to go pheasant hunting - 10/26/17 02:57 AM

I just found out Rye, my Brittany pup, has been in Kansas without me.

I've had him at the trainer this month, for conditioning and a little last minute work. When I called to see about picking him up today and I found that he's been in Kansas the last few days...I jealous!!! I want to chase pheasant in Kansas instead of sitting at a desk this week!

Seems like the trainer had a couple of dogs to run in a field trial\hunt test in Kansas, so he took the whole truck load, and has been running them on wild birds for a couple of days. It's not fair crying

He better rest up on the way back, we need to get down to business Saturday morning elmer

Re: Looking to go pheasant hunting - 10/29/17 06:16 AM

I would give Kansas a go if you've never been. Stop at the first walmart you come across on your way in and pick up the WIHA (walk in hunting access) guide book and a license ($90 good through jan 1st). The areas are highlighted by county. Have fun on the road, I can give you some county pointers for good opportunities at mixed bags (bobwhite and pheasant) if you'd like just pm me. I highly recommend hitting it before Thanksgiving weekend if at all possible. Doesnt take those birds to wise up and then they get very wise... we were hunting them in good numbers up til closing week last year it just takes a little different approach. If you can land a KS guide this late and the year Id say go for it, they will hunt a mix of private and WIHA which will give you a good jump on whats around and where. Just my .02. Have a blast!

Leaving for White Lake, SD. on Thursday. 9 day trip we’ll hunt 4 days private land. 5th year in a row. Drought has bird numbers down a bit, but we’ll scratch out limits for sure.

Back before the last ice age we used to hunt Iowa a lot. Saw a good number of birds. I don't know anymore but Iowa does seem to get left off the list.
