Emergency Kit for Dogs

What's in your "in the field" emergency kit for your dog?

Medical staple gun, hydrogen peroxide, Neosporin, gauze, 3m Coban adherent wrap, 2x2 Pads, Aspirin, duck tape

Sounds good but throw in some EMT jell and an antihistamine in case of a snake run-in. And of course the address and phone number of closest vet.

I had my Vet put together a snake bite kit with written instructions on what to give and in what order. I keep it on the mule when it is warm enough for snakes to be a problem and hope I never have to use it.

You guys about have my list if you add a small bottle of saline eye wash

Anyone carry benadryl to immediately provide to a dog if they are snake bit?

I always carry a veterinarian hunting with me.

I will say this. Opening weekend my 7 month old pointer hit a a barbed wire fence and opened his front left leg and the artery. I had some "Wound Seal" I purchased from Walgreens. Poured it on the wound and bandaged it up and went to vet. Two hours later the vet told me I did the right thing. Blood was pumping out just like in the movies. If I would have not had that things might have been alot worse.

Other than stuff already mentioned. Package off Odormute. It's a bad day on a long road trip when the dog has a skunk encounter. You need something that you can mix up to treat the dog with on site.

Remember that you can use some of the stuff in there for yourself. Add Benadryl cream or it's generic. I couple of friends got into fire ants while opening a gap on our Saturdays hunt. You can put the cream on the bite immediately and the mark will go down within 30 minutes. Leave it untreated and I might still be there next year.

Ok, sorry it took so long. But here is what I have in my first aid kit I keep in truck. This will cover dogs and humans. Skin stapler & staple remover, bandaids,honey packets,Vaseline,q-tips, liquid benadryl, latex gloves, antimicrobial ophthalmic gel for dogs eyes, a lighter, magnifier for seeing close, rubber bands, bread ties, 81 mg aspirin,hydrocortisone cream with aloe for bug bites or allergic reactions, emergency burn cream, vionex (use when no wayer or soap is available), locking forceps, wound seal, super glue, triple antibiotic,alcohol swabs, paramedic scissors and regular scissors, thermometer, 60 ml catheter syringe for oral meds on dog, povidone-iodine swabsticks, emergency blanket for going into shock, 8x3 nonstick pafs, 9x5 surgical dressing, duck tap, 4x4 gauze pads, assorted medical tap and wraps, eye wash, antiseptic skin cleaner, cold packs, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol.

Now I carry a field kit for emergency. It consists of emergency blanket, q-tips latex gloves, small flashlight, lighter, matches, wound seal, alcohol swabs, duck tap, povidone-iodine swabs, honey packets, lock blade knife, bandaids, hand sanitizer, tweezers, finger nail clippers, electrical tape, triple antibiotic, super glue, eye wash, rubber bands and 2 9x5 surgical dressings.

Now, let me add some info. I also went online and printed out 2 first aid books for dogs and read them through. You have to know how to apply the kit before it's good. Also have cheat sheets on how much medicine to use and what to do in different situations. I'm 51 yrs young and I learned along time ago when your in "GO" mode you can't always trust your mind to recall everything exactly like you need.

One other thing I just thought of. I'm also a trapper down on my own property. One would be wise to carry a piece of rope in their vest about 4 feet long. If your dog gets caught in a conibear trap you'll need it to get them out. I know alot of the WMA's either don't allow or they have some kinda of restrictions on trapping, but if some guy that doesn't respect laws and regulations gets out there and sets out a conibear trap and your dog gets caught in it, he will die if you are not prepared. Be sure to youtube rope and conibear to learn how to release them.
