In my opinion, you would be much better off heading up to Kansas or the Panhandle and chasing wild birds. Anything within 2 hrs of your locations will be pen raised birds.
You won't get near the excitement with pen raised birds, no matter what anyone says. It isn't anywhere close to hunting birds in the wild.

What would you suggest in the pan handle?

Obese dumb, and sit till you kick them pen raised birds are not fun,and not what I call upland hunting. The wise, wary, running, and wild birds are so much fun.

You are going to have to go to northern Kansas as southwest Kansas is no bueno either. We have cancelled all our bird hunts this year in Kansas.

If you just want to hunt some pheasants, I can get some. I'm just south of SS (Arbala) around the holidays. They're not wild, but you don't have to drive 12hrs. I sometimes do mock hunts there, to train my dog.
